Jim is a 1972 graduate of the University of Notre Dame Law School and is a retired Partner at the 500+ lawyer national law firm of Quarles & Brady LLP with offices in Wisconsin, Illinois, Florida, Indiana, Minnesota, Washington D.C., California and Arizona. He received his undergraduate degree from Marquette University in 1969, graduating as the Outstanding Senior in the College of Liberal Arts. In law school he served as Managing Editor of the Notre Dame Law Review.
Jim was selected by the Wisconsin Law Foundation to receive the Charles Goldberg Award for Life Time Achievement in 2012 and by the Wisconsin Law Journal as a Leader in the Law 2006 and was consistently selected by Law & Politics as a Wisconsin Super Lawyer. He has also consistently been listed in the Best Lawyers in America (in 2014 he was selected by Best Lawyers as Lawyer of the Year, Milwaukee, in Bank Regulation Law and for 2016 as Lawyer of the Year in Litigation - Banking and Finance) and in Who’s Who in American Law. He was a Director (and member of the Executive and Audit Committees) of the Wisconsin Association of Manufacturers and Commerce - the leading business organization in Wisconsin. He served as a Director of Partners Advancing Values in Education, Inc. (PAVE), n/k/a City Forward Collective, a nationally recognized foundation which attempts to expand educational opportunities for economically disadvantaged children and as a Director of Cristo Rey Jesuit Milwaukee High School. He is a Director and Past President of the Wisconsin Equal Justice Fund, Inc. and the Wisconsin Law Foundation. He has also served as a member, and Vice Chair, of the Wisconsin Supreme Court, Office of Lawyer Regulation, Preliminary Review Committee, which handles ethics complaints against Wisconsin lawyers and currently serves a Wisconsin Supreme Court Referee for such matters. He is a Life Fellow of both the American Bar and the Wisconsin Law Foundations. He has also served as an Officer and Director of the Notre Dame Club of Milwaukee.
Jim is married to Michelle and is the father of five adult children: Scott, an award winning TV news anchor in Dallas, TX - (who sometimes appears on the TODAY Show); Ryan, a tenured professor at The Ohio State University; Andrea, who has worked in the banking industry, but is currently working on reading skills with grade school students. Andrea's husband, Jeff Monosso, is a Fox News radio reporter and the Chicago Fox radio Bureau Chief, Sean, who works for the Weiman company in the Chicago area and Yousef, a college student. He has five grandchildren.
Scott, Ryan and Sean also graduated from Notre Dame. During his free time he plays golf.
Jim's wife, Michelle, graduated from the Defense Language Institute in Monterrey, CA
and, magna cum laude, from the American University in Cairo, Egypt. She is fluent in Arabic and served America in Military intelligence, intercepting communications in Iraq and worked at the American embassy in Cairo.
