Nick Sutton

This is an April, 2016, update to the pre- 2012 reunion posting.

Education: BS (Engineering) Iowa State; JD University of California, Hastings; Harvard Graduate Business School (OPM).

U.S. Army Officer, including Vietnam service.

Before law school, I worked for Hewlett Packard in Palo Alto, California. After law school I clerked for the Chief Justice of the California Supreme Court, and then I worked for a large law firm by the name of Pillsbury, Madison & Sutro (now Pillsbury, Winthrop et al). In 1978 I started an oil & gas company (go figure) that I, and my team, built over time. We went public in 1992 and in 2001 we got the "offer that we couldn't refuse." I was the Chairman and CEO. For about three years I served on public company and non-profit boards but then in 2004 I started another oil & gas company where I am, again, Chairman and CEO.

After living in the San Francisco area for almost forty years, in 2013 my wife and I moved to Jackson Hole Wyoming. We spend about nine months a year there and about three months in Scottsdale. I’m still actively working in Denver but it’s a short flight there from either Jackson Hole or Scottsdale.

Our family is a blended family. I first married in 1981 but we separated in 1996. I remarried in 2002 to a wonderful lady named Susan Jane. Children, from oldest to youngest: First is Keith, my stepson from my first marriage. He now is 40; he was an All-American tennis player in college (at SMU) and he played on the pro tour for a while. He lives in Marin County (just north of San Francisco) where he runs the youth program at a tennis club. He's married and he and his wife, Sheila, have two little girls, ages three and two. Next is my daughter, Lindsay, age 33. She graduated from the University of Michigan and last May she graduated from the Duke University School of Nursing. She is working as a Labor & Delivery nurse in San Francisco and is engaged to a wonderful young man. Next is Zach, a stepson from my current marriage. Zach graduated from West Point and, among other assignments, he served in Afghanistan as aide-de-camp to the #2 State Department official in the country. After satisfying his military obligation he matriculated to Duke’s Fuqua School of Business from which he will graduate this May. Next is Nick (junior), age 29. Nick graduated from Duke University and now is working in Denver as a financial analyst for my company. He also is studying for his Master’s Degree at Colorado University. An interesting factoid about Nick is that he walked on the Duke basketball team and played for "Coach K" for a year and a half until a broken hand ended his basketball "career." His team, collectively speaking, is the team that won the NCAA national championship in 2010. Harry, age 25, is our youngest. He also graduated from Duke, in 2013, and he currently is working in wealth management in the Silicon Valley.

Interests have been wide and varied but my focus has been on family and employees. We live on the Snake River so fishing is a natural. I play a little golf and we like to travel.

I am happy to report that Susan Jane continues in remission after a three year battle with acute leukemia. We no longer take health for granted.
