Today's Featured Biography
Steve Novy
Jalmar Forsberg and Jacob Rodmark, the Swedish exchange students at GW in '81/'82, got me all excited to spend some time in Europe. So I spent my entire senior year in Lyon, France. (Lisa Nakane went, too) I came back speaking French, but was kind of sorry to have missed my senior year at GW!
Then I went to CU, got an Environmental Design degree and worked for the Historic American Building Survey in California for a while.
That's where I met Julia. She and I were helping to preserve the turn-of-the-century buildings in Old Oakland.
Work had slowed down in architecture, and Julia decided to go to Japan to teach English. She got a great little house and car in Nagano Ken in the Japanese Alps. She invited me to join her and I just couldn't refuse! (We had lived through 1989 Loma Prieta Earthquake in Oakland, so we decided to push our luck and move to the OTHER place where there are lots of earthquakes!)
We spent the next two years teaching English, and racing mountain bikes in the Japanese mountains. An architect friend recommended that I apply for a position with his former firm in Tokyo. It seemed like a great opportunity... but working in the Japanese corporate world just wasn't for me, and I got tired of earthquakes.
I quit, we came back to the States and settled in the Roaring Fork Valley. Now, I have an architecture firm in Carbondale. We design sustainably-oriented buildings, affordable housing and an occasional custom home.
Julia works at home doing small home designs, remodels and additions.
We have a two-year son, Blake who loves to talk and sing songs. We're expecting a new baby some time around May 15th!
So, does anyone know where Jalmar and Jacob are these days?

"Just discovered your product today while trying to locate classmates ahead of our 50th reunion in 2020. The fact that you did this in a noncommercial manner in a world where everything has a price tag deserves recognition and respect, in my view.
Thank you and good luck in all your endeavors."
