      Today's Featured Biography

	Bradford Morgan

Grew up in Linda Vista in the 1950s, first living in one of the flat-roofed, shingle-sided duplexes known as "cracker boxes." I remember that my time at Linda Vista Elementary was more concerned with surviving than learning.
Academics became more important at Montgomery and at Kearny. This was due more (but not entirely) to picking "intellectual" friends than to the efforts of the teachers or system. Howard LeRoy Moore (Kearny 1961), for example, was passionate about self-education, always along independent lines: reading stacks of used books (mostly classics and science), modifying old cameras, fixing old radios, etc.

I remember the influence of the fiercely independent Charles Turner who would carry around a rectangular canvas pack every day, loaded mostly with physics books that seemed to be beyond us all. Another good friend in high school was Terry Theo Warner (Kearny 1961), again an independent but conservative learner. Never heard from these friends after leaving Kearny.

Left Kearny in 1962 for Berkeley, along with Dave Yoon and Walter Smith (now Wilde), and later Sunishi Santohigashi and others who came from Kearny.

At Berkeley, I lived in the Barrington Hall Co-Op with Dave as one of my roommates. Once, on my way to class, I stopped to listen to Mario Savio during his much-celebrated speech in 1964. I admired his nervous energy, a personal quality that could just as well have empowered a more conservative viewpoint. I still cherish the anti-Establishment sentiments of those times.

Married Barbara Trester in 1967 in a Lutheran Church near campus. She was newly arrived from nursing school in Minneapolis. To me, she was a wholesome alternative to the girls in Berkeley.

Was drafted into the Army after graduation from Berkeley and was sent to Fort Lewis for Basic and Advanced Infantry Training. Ended up in Germany instead of Vietnam, presumably because brother Ronald (Kearny 1964) was killed in combat. My mission in Germany was to hold back the Soviet hordes from invading central Europe.

After the military, I was off to get a Ph.D. in English at the University of Denver. Barbara and I had two children while there. Finally ended up teaching at the state engineering university in the Black Hills of South Dakota, where I'm professor emeritus. We live on a pine-forested sandstone mountain ridge looking east toward the plains and west toward Wyoming, about 50 miles away.
