Today's Featured Biography
Jan Snyder
Jan Snyder
Jan Snyder grew up in the San Francisco Bay Area in a family that emphasized interest in international relationships. While in high school, he met Clarice and they dated for five years before their marriage in early 1967. During the summer of 1966, Jan took a trip around the World that influenced his interest in Africa and a number of other places of biological interest. In 1969, he and Clarice traveled to East Africa with colleagues from San Francisco State College (now University) and it was then that she joined Jan in her love for Africa.
With bachelors and masters degrees in biology, from San Francisco State, he attended Arizona State University for a doctorate in immunology but later switched career goals and became a high school science teacher. During a trip to Kenya in 1997, he realized his professional interest in gender and ethnic equity issues in education.
Jan spent 23 years as a high school biology teacher in the Phoenix Union High School District. Throughout most of his tenure as a science teacher, he continued to enroll in coursework at ASU and completed his doctorate in 2004. The focus of his professional interests, and research, continued to be in Science Education with an emphasis on gender-by-ethnic equity. On a global scale, females and minorities do not typically receive equal opportunities in the science classroom.
Having traveled through 25-30 countries around the World, Jan has personally witnessed the negative effects of gender and ethnic equity issues related to education as well as other social infrastructures. In developing and pre-developing countries, this issue is typically pervasive and effectively maintains the status quo for the majority of the people who live under extreme poverty.
Over the past few years, interests in equity issues have included work in the south Central African Country of Malawi where he and Clarice have worked on a variety of projects. Incorporation of Sustainable Resources, Ltd, has created a new level of opportunities for Jan, Clarice, and the wonderful people with whom we have become associated, to address some of the social inequities we have personally witnessed during our numerous trips to Africa.
