Today's Featured Biography
Vern Howe
Soon after graduation, the Navy called in my "reserve chip" and I was off to Sonar School in San Diego. Then on to Key West, FL to learn maintenance of Analog Computer Systems. First duty was U.S.S. Leahy (DLG-16) in Charleston, SC; a Terrier Guided Missile launch platform. Made two Mediterranean Cruises in between several Caribbean stops in the Atlantic Fleet Missile Test Firing Range. '66 - Decom'd Leahy in Philadelphia. Made it all the way through submarine qualification testing, but Dr. forgot to sign physical exam papers... Back to sea on an old WWII greyhound - HATED IT. Took a year to find a swap to the West Coast (after another Med Cruise); on to a San Diego based Destroyer Tender; underway to WestPac; first stop: Subic Bay, Philippines. Vietnam was hot and heavy then. Interviewed with Navy Reps from Naval Weapons Det 22; deployed at Da Nang AFB; took a four month assignment in Nov. 67; was supposed to be on call for servo motor repairs - gun mounts, directors, etc. Real job was repairing small arms - Mostly M-16s; never saw any piece with so damn many springs in it; most were from fleet marines. None I saw had cleaning kits; probably lost 'em in heat of battle... Fixed 'em up and cobbled together "kits" from parts around the shop; sent 'em back out to the field - always prayed for those that used 'em... Was there in Feb '68 TET!!! Bunches of marines between the front gate out to Hiway One and the airstrip; sorry Charlie! Got out in May of '71; moved back to San Diego, met my wife Rachael, married in '73. Two boys Doug b. '78; Russ b. 81; In '71, I worked as line mechanic Tide Chry/Plym Oceanside; '72, I was a Redeye and Standard Arm Missile Inspector for Gen. Dynamics; '73 - Carpentry/Construction; '74 - Computer Technician U.S. Navy; taught myself programming in CMS-2 a COBOL Fortran hybrid for diagnosing hardware problems; '78 - I landed a job as Program Test Engineer; later became a Software Engineer; then a Systems Engineer. Left Civil Service in '85 to join Hughes Aircraft Company as Systems Engineer. Became Project Engineer in '94; Technical Director '96; and Program Manager for Advanced Combat Direction System '98; Retired in 2006. So sorry I missed all of those reunions - would like to have seen all of my classmates.
