Today's Featured Biography
Robert Gustafson
Hi, Unfortunately I am not going to be able to attend the reunion but I hope to have another opportunity. Anyway I left my bio instead though I do apologize for it being so long.
I left Vanden in the second semester of my sophomore year and moved to Davis. We stayed there for one semester and that summer moved to a little, tiny town of less than 5,000 people named Susanville. This was quite the culture shock as the kids in that town had all known each other since they were infants. Despite this it worked out ok. However when I graduated there were few opportunities there so in my infinite wisdom I joined the Army and ended up a grunt. When I came to 7 years later I had 2 kids and no skills.
I came back to San Louis Obispo where my family had moved and was fortunate to get into a program where I was trained as a Psychiatric Technician. From there I went to Chico State and received a BA in psychology. We moved to Texas where my wife at the time was from. I earned a Masters of Science in Social Work at University Texas, Arlington and I am working on my PHD, albeit very slowly.
I have been blessed more than I can believe at times. I have been able to make a living doing what I know I am supposed to do. I've been a nurse, a substance abuse counselor, social worker and somehow even a recreation therapist. I have worked with the mentally ill homeless, with hospice, with the chemically dependent as well as survivors of all ages.
There have been moments of profound sadness and tragic loss over the years but I have never woke up feeling that what I did had no meaning. For that I am grateful.
While I can I would like to thank the 2 people that taught me more about doing this work than anyone else. Walter King taught me the strength in being a decent and honorable man. Paul Baczewski taught me to not be afraid to ask the next question and be willing to trust my own perceptions.
I have been fortunate as well to meet my wife Cathleen. She is the love of my life and still stuns me at times with how beautiful she is. She introduced me to the book "Military Brats" and helped my understand how we speak a different language than others. She understands without my having to explain things like the Officer's pool or driving thru the gates to get home. For her, too, I am grateful.
All and all I can't complain.

"Just discovered your product today while trying to locate classmates ahead of our 50th reunion in 2020. The fact that you did this in a noncommercial manner in a world where everything has a price tag deserves recognition and respect, in my view.
Thank you and good luck in all your endeavors."
