Today's Featured Biography
Gay King Wiseman
Hi all!
I am ashamed I did not keep up with any of my EG friends after a year or 2. I just moved on. Now I hope to be able to recognize some of you, and apologize for that in person!
I met my longtime husband (and still forever friend, Gary Wiseman) in Nov 1971 while starting at CSUS. Took a few influential courses there, but and then Gary and I booked it out of California, seeking a rural college town instead of the city life... we were back-to-the-land aspirants.
After some travels, we ended up in upstate western NY, went to school for 3 years at teensy SUNY at Alfred NY, which is kinda near Cornell/Ithaca/Finger Lakes. I got an AAS in Communications Media from Alfred; then -- because, too COLD in NY -- we moved to Tampa, Florida (back to a city scene) where I finally completed college with a BA in Mass Communications/Film at Univ. of South Florida in '78.
THEN, back to California, intending just a visit, before finally focusing on obtaining that piece of land to homestead and get all self-reliant on... but I got offered a super fun summer job on the Truckee River while out here... and that led to a super fun winter photo job at Squaw Valley... and so, we ended up sticking in the Sierras. We finally got a 10 acre piece of logged-over forest land near Dutch Flat in 1980, started building a little cabin on it, started having kiddos, and figuring out how to manage a challenging off-grid life at home, with a speculative photography business that meant chasing extreme sports events and athletes all over the west. That all would intrigue, challenge, support, and motivate me for a couple of decades.
Gary and I split up though, and my second partner, Russell, wanted kids... so I had two more for a total of 4. They're -- of course -- all grown up now and have taken off on their own lives. None have graced me with grandkids yet, but two are hoping to.
My second career evolved out of the first; I had gotten early into digital photography, and other forms of artistic computer apps in the 90s, went back to grad school, earned an MS in Educational Technology in 2000, began teaching, photography, filmmaking, and creative computing courses, at public schools in Placer Co.; at a private school in Sac; at an international school in England... had some great European travel adventures with my kids during those years.
Russell was killed in an accident in 2008, and I've been managing this off-grid cabin lifestyle by myself since. It took me a few years to get comfortable living alone -- I never ever had! -- but now I think it's the way I'll end my days, I have gotten comfy with myself and a bit set in my ways. But I'm starting to accept that I need to get closer to town and transportation options, I'm only getting older... the fire season has become brutally uncomfortable out on this overgrown forested ridge, and the winter storms keep getting more intense... some serious roof patching I had to do this year. So... change is ahead. As usual, I can't see around this corner, don't really know where I'll go when I leave here... I'm kind of wanting to be a little nomadic, but I don't like RVs, so thinking about some long thru-hikes with my dog, alternating between visits with my kids and friends. Well, we'll see! New adventures likely ahead!
