Cheryl Szopinski

A lot has happened in my life since graduation! I went to Mt. Mary College for 2 years & then transferred to Northern Illinois University, where I received my bachelor’s degree in teaching the visually impaired. My favorite job I had was teaching Braille to 3 & 4 year olds at the Center for the Deaf-Blind. After teaching for a while, I got married. Unfortunately, abuse & I didn’t seem to get along too great, so I was divorced after 7 years of living hell.

When I had turned 40, my doctor informed me that she wanted me to see an audiologist, so off I went for an appointment with an audiologist. The audiologist said he was going to do a test & he had me sit down & then proceeded to sit behind me for my test. I anxiously waited for the test to begin, but it seemed it would never begin. The audiologist came & sat in front of me, & then went on to inform me that I was Deaf. Apparently, one of the childhood illnesses I had had, took away my hearing. I had proficiently learned to lip read, to avoid being scolded all the time, for not listening. After I learned this, I went on to learn sign language, procured a hearing alert service dog, & moved into an apartment for the Deaf & hard of hearing, where I’m currently living. All of our activities are in sign language, & I absolutely love it where I live.

My service dog is my life! He’s currently 11 years old. His name is Comfy, & he’s a Shih Tzu. He’s the smartest little guy you’ve ever met! He even knows sign language! I don’t know where I’d be without him!

I’m active in my church, love to knit, do crafts, and read. I currently volunteer in the gift shop at Wilson Senior Center. I’m a very social person, so this past year, has been the worst thing for me. I miss my friends from high school & am anxious to reconnect.
