Today's Featured Biography
Jay Gruenwald
After high school, I enlisted in the USAF ('66 -'70). I was sent to the Philippines for a while, but for the most part, I was stationed at Travis AFB, in the San Francisco bay area. What a great place to have been during the mid 60’s!
I used the G.I. bill to attend college. I completed my Associate of Science degree in horticulture and went on to Cal State. I met my wife, LaRita, in college and we were married in 1978. After college, we moved to Arizona to take jobs in education; she taught elementary school, and I taught at a local college.
In 1981, a close friend wanted to open a video store and coerced me into becoming partners in the first video store in the community in which we lived. We were very successful, and within a year, we had opened multiple locations. We had a falling out and split the partnership in 1983. Shortly after the split, LaRita and I moved back to the desert of Southern California, not far from Palm Springs, and started our own video business. By 1988, we had seven locations in six cities and some 75 employees. Our company was listed in the top 100 most successful video retailers, nationwide. Many of our stores were larger than Blockbuster video.
We did a lot of traveling, and have been to a lot of interesting places! In 1990, we were blessed with a son! As Southern California is not a great place to raise children, we moved back to Wisconsin in 1993. The Midwest is still a great place to raise kids! We moved to Elm Grove, and we both went back to teaching. We taught at a private, K-12, college preparatory school in Brookfield. Besides working full time, I took night classes and earned a Bachelor of Science degree in computer science. Upon graduation, I went to work in the private sector as an I.T. administrator.
We retired in 2009 and moved back to Northern California. We are near Lake Tahoe, San Francisco, and the Napa Valley. I play a lot of golf, run, ride my bike, read a lot, enjoy good wine, craft beer, etc. And life is good…

"Just discovered your product today while trying to locate classmates ahead of our 50th reunion in 2020. The fact that you did this in a noncommercial manner in a world where everything has a price tag deserves recognition and respect, in my view.
Thank you and good luck in all your endeavors."
