Today's Featured Biography
Gerard Veneman
Born and raised in Aruba my parents immigrated to Beloit in 1964 where my late brother Dirk sponsored us. He was the chief patent attorney at Beloit Corporation. English was my second language so at age 14 it made for some embarrassing moments. Coach Barnabo (sp?)told me to get gym gear which included an item I did not know of let alone heard of. I remember sitting on the bus next to a Pulaski girl going home and asking her what a supporter was! She referred me back to coach and needless to say I never sat near her again! :-)
Every one of the four brothers in my family had to be engineers so off I went at age 16 to UW-Janesville to major in mechanical engineering along with Pat Monahan, Ray Cipra and Jim Wright, as I recall.
Pat and I were enrolled in Beloit Corporation's engineering co-op program where we would go to school one semester and the next semester work for the corp. This great way of financing my way through school, not to mention gaining excellent experience almost cost me my life.
In 1968 when I turned 18 and had to register for the draft I discovered I could not get a student deferment because of this co-op program so got classified 1-A for the draft.
I opted to volunteer instead and became a helicopter pilot ending up flying CH-47 Chinooks in Vietnam from June 1970-June 1971.
About two months into my tour of duty (slow learner) it occurred to me I might not make it home. So I made a deal with my Maker, get me out alive and I will serve. Having discovered sex already, I could not be a priest, so became a social worker instead!
I have had a fabulous career as a social worker working with abused and neglected children for over two decades. 21 years in Colorado Springs, 12 in Tampa and now for my swan song serving Veterans in Palo Alto, CA and surroundings.
I've been married to my soulmate Marti for 32 years and we have three sons between us and 5 grandchildren.
Life is good!

Thank you and good luck in all your endeavors."
