Today's Featured Biography
Dan Wolfrom
Life since graduating from Peninsula has focused on two facets - family and professional. Both continue to evolve and bring great joy.
Family: After graduating from Central Washington in 1965, I married Joen in the spring of 1966 and we both moved to Gig Harbor where we built our current home on Fox Island in 1973. We have raised three children and have four delightful grandchildren all living within an hour of our home allowing us to spend just the right amount of time with them.
Joen began her career as an educator at Artondale elementary; took a break to spend time at home while our three children (Danielle, Dane, David) went through school; developed her talent as an artist, author, lecturer, and business owner. Danielle is a partner in a law firm and has two sons. Dane is a business manager for a publishing company and head swim coach for a team in Tacoma. David is an owner of an IT company located in Tacoma and has one son and one duaghter.
Professional: During my college years, I competed on the swim team and developed a passion for the sport. This would continue into a coaching career after spending two years in the Navy. In 1969 I began a teaching and coaching career after graduating with an education degree from Pacific Lutheran University. This would continue until retiring from the classroom in 2002 and coaching in 2005. My work in education would continue as a consultant working with a grant from the Gates Foundation. I continue to work for the Tacoma School District being responsible for their College Bound Scholarship program - a program for low-income students funded by the state of Washington.
Most of my education career was spent at Henry Foss High School in Tacoma after it opened in 1973. I was the head swim coach from that time until 2005 and the head age-group coach for Tacoma Swim Club for 25 years. During those years I was fortunate to have coached some very talented athletes. They made me look good and allowed me to be inducted into the Hall of Fame of Pacific Northwest Swimming (2005), Washington Swimming Coaches Association (2005), and Tacoma-Pierce County Sports (2007).
Future: I am excitedly anticipating the future. Joen and I enjoy working, spending time with our children and their families, and traveling - especially to Hawaii which we do annually in February. My latest passion has been golf which I took up after retiring from the classroom. It is only a passion since my game is really poor, but I really enjoy getting out onto a variety of beautiful courses.
