Today's Featured Biography
Coral Mangus
Well here goes: When I was young my mother used to call me Ramblin Rose (my middle name is Rose). I think she knew me better than I thought because as I will reflect here on the last 50 years, she was “spot on.” In 1969, I lived and worked in the Silicon Valley area. From there I moved to Wyoming, then South Dakota and back home.
I’ve had over 30 jobs, 3 businesses, went to 3 different schools, and finally graduated in 1982 at the age of 32. I would get a whim and go off on another adventure? I did get a B. S. and for those who truly know me, it doesn’t just stand for Bachelor of Science. In 1982-1986, I worked and lived in Wasatch County. I was an Alcohol and Drug Prevention Coordinator working with elementary through the elderly helping with peer pressure, self-esteem building and managing the elder with their prescription drugs us.
Since I had a degree in education, I moved back to Granger, bought a house 3 min. from where I grew up and started teaching 6th grade at Monroe Elementary. Of course, it wasn’t the one I went to but that was kind of cool. I taught there for 3 years, then went to Baccus Elementary, so I could teach year-round. After 1 ½ years, the principle called me in his office and said that the district was basically going to fire me for some trumped up charge and if I didn’t sign the resignation papers, they would take my teaching certificate away. I found out later it was because I had gone through a commitment ceremony with my partner, Andrea. After this experience, I got out of teaching and worked for Kinko’s for 15 years but at the age of 57 I left. I couldn’t be on my feet anymore, so I started teaching for a different school district, and after 16 years of being away from teaching, I took some refresher courses. I taught 3 more years and at the age of 60, I was diagnosed with a rare form of heart and lung disease, so I ‘ve been on oxygen 24/7 for 8 years. It’s a progressive disease so I must be very careful.
When the state opened same sex marriage in December of 2013, Andrea and I went to the courthouse and got married. Then they took it back, so we made a trip to Minnesota to get married there. Besides then her family and friends from Wisconsin could be there.
I am so grateful to her for her support, help, and encouragement to get through my health problems.
On this 50th class reunion we will have been together 30 years and I am not rambling anymore!
