Today's Featured Biography
Jerrold (Ya'akov) Aronson
In the US I earned a BS degree (Education) from the University of Pennsylvania and an MA degree (History) from Columbia. After completing the bachelor's degree (the certificate of which is in Latin and when I asked the secretary in the office what it said she with a straight face explained that it congratulates me for studying 4 years in a university and remaining a bachelor) I served in the US Army on active duty in 1961-62 and in the reserves until 1969, reaching the rank of Captain.
Taught history in high school in the New York City area for 9 years. Married Pam (Pnina) Forman from Newport News, VA in 1966 and we have 5 daughters who have given us 32 grandchildren.
In 1972 we moved to Israel and worked as farmers, first in a kibbutz (collective settlement)and then as owners of a private farm in a moshav (small shareholders settlement). We raised vegetables, wheat and chickens. At one point I retrained to become a librarian earning a Graduate Librarian's Certificate (MA without a thesis) at Bar Ilan University in Ramat Gan and worked in that field for 30 years at the same University, completing my career with 18 years Chief Librarian and Director of Libraries at Bar Ilan (ca 25,000 students). Was active for almost two decades in national and international librarians' associations, including editing a column in a professional journal, and made frequent trips abroad, US and GB, to attend professional meetings.
Served 15 years in the Israeli Army, (reserve duty with yearly periods of active duty - served 4 tours in Lebanon in 1982-84), and retired as a corporal (they aren't as generous with ranks in Israel as in the US). Was an armored personnel carrier driver in the medical corps.
Retired from the library at the end of 2004 and now keep myself busy mainly taking adult education courses and doing volunteer work.
My wife was an English teacher in the States and in Israel for 14 years and later went into the private sector where she became a technical writer for a software house. She retired in 2015 after 15 years with the same company.
After retirement I prepared a catalog for a library in Rehovot where I live and coordinated the development of a DVD full text database for a unit of Bar Ilan University the university from which I had retired.
In 2011 I delivered a paper at the annual convention of the Association of Jewish Libraries in Montreal on "Building Bar Ilan University's Rare Book Collection". At the organization's annual convention in Houston in 2013 I delivered a paper on "Jews in the Early History of Texas" and at the 2016 convention in Charleston SC I delivered a paper on "Jews in South Carolina history from its founding until the War Between the States".
We have 32 grand children and 10 great grandchildren. Seven grandchildren are married. One of our latest granddaughters was born a couple of weeks after her niece.
