Heather Craft Stewart
I was born in Orange. I love the color orange, although I can not wear it. I started in gymnastics when I was five, eventually switched to dance: jazz, ballet, and toe. I played recreational soccer for five years or so until knee problems became prohibitive. I attended West Orange-Stark High School (of course) where I was in choir, student government, Honor Society, Business Professionals of America, soccer (manager--those knees, you know), and the Fillies drill team. I "reigned" as both the Orange County Gumbo Junior Miss and Miss Gumbo in large part due to the fact, I believe, that I love to talk and so, with God's help, generally do it well. Attended Southwest Texas State University in San Marcos, Texas where I was a member of the Strutters drill team for three years. I earned a degree in Organizational Communications with a minor in psychology and a secondary English teaching certificate.
I met my husband in a dance hall in Austin, Texas while being the designated driver for my roommates. Our first date was riding horseback--He had me hooked from the get-go! We agreed that if we loved each other and God intended for it to be forever, then we would love each other after we finished college. After over three years of dating and waiting, we married within three months of having graduated.
Zed is our age, has a degree in wildlife biology and range management, reads a variety of subjects, has a love affair with firearms, military tactics, and horses...especially when combined, and is wonderful husband and father.
Zed and our families have hauled me and my stuff all over the state of Texas in the past 8 years that we have been married. We have lived in Amarillo, Pearsall, Goodnight, on the JA Ranch, Brackettville, Bluff Dale, and now, Nursery-between Cuero and Victoria-(with a few jogs back and forth in between there). I have lived with my in-laws several times for varying periods of time and have enjoyed it every time. Extended families are desired in our household.
I was raised a city girl, but have thrived on country life ever since we left Amarillo. I have taught sixth grade English and substituted in several places and even presided over the AEP (alternative education placement) at one school for a semester. I now teach 8th grade reading and English for VISD.
We have a six-year-old son, Duncan Augustus Stewart, who our families believe was a surprise, but who could not have been more tried for. He starts kidergarten in August and loves books, critters (especially his horse and dogs), computers, playing outside...just about anything interests him.
I adore my family. My mom and my mother-in-law are my two bestfriends. My father-in-law treats me like a princess. My brother, Chad, has just been licensed to preach and is currently teaching in Botswana, Africa at a mission school. Our grandparents and elderly aunts, cousins, etc. provide an appreciative audience for my newsy letters.
I drive my husband nuts because I am always looking at the ground for rocks, arrowheads, fossils, etc. instead of looking around me. It also drives him nuts that Duncan likes to do the same thing. I have learned to shoot rifles and pistols, although I do not practice as much as Zed wants me to. I have learned enough about firearms and wildlife biology to generally carry on a decent conversation with my husband and give him some things to think about. Zed coming to me for an opinion outside of my normal realm rates right up there with feeling like super-mom when Duncan comes to me with a problem.
This former Filly and Strutter has learned to sail through mud up to her arm pits in four-wheel drive hauling a feed wagon and sooking cows along behind in the pouring rain. I have had quite a few opportunities to cook for the most appreciative crowd in the world: cowboys. I have discovered that dust and dishes will wait (and often do) where my child's smile and wanting my attention will not. I love people, but have found that I could happily be a hermit as long as Zed was one with me. (I think that is part of the reason God gave us a child that craves being around other people, so that we would make the effort to have a life off of the ranch.) I am, also, long-winded.
Give me a book and I am happy as a clam for hours. Give me a pen and I can write stuff for days. Give me a dishwasher, which I do not have, and I could cook all of the time.
Love, Heather
