Today's Featured Biography

Lowell Clark

I was born in Lufkin, TX. started in the band program in the 7th grade. In high school I was the first All-State player from the Lufkin band. I graduated from SFA with my Masters Degree in 1959, went into the 6-month active duty program with the army reserve in June, after my 6-months duty, I took a job at mid-term teaching Jr. Hi. band in Liberty, TX. I finished that year and one more(60-61). I wanted to get into a High School and moved to Hull-Daisetta fall of '61, I spent 3 years there and then moved back to Liberty H.S. I am proud to say that the year after I left Hull-Daisetta they were selected the third best band in the state in class A. At Liberty I taught H.S. band, J.H. band & beginners band on 3 different campuses all by myself. After two years there, I was asked to take a job as Director of Music at Northeast Houston I.S.D. I was also director of the M. B. Smiley H.S. Band. My students there took a lot of pride in their marching band and it had the reputation of being one of the best in the Houston area. While I was at Smiley H.S. I was asked to do In-Service Training for the Aldine I.S.D and Houston I.S.D. band directors. I spent 6 years at Smiley, then was invited to move to Beaumont to be Director of Music for the South Park I.S.D. While I was there South Park I.S.D. merged with Beaumont I.S.D. and they named the combined district Beaumont I.S.D. I spent 21 years in Beaumont, we bought our retirement home on Lake Livingston in December of 1993 and I retired from Beaumont spring of 1994. After we moved to Livingston, I discovered that the Goodrich I.S.D. wanted to "start" a band program. The school was very small- 300 K-12, no football team so no marching band. I took that job "Part time" from 8:00-12:00 daily. I did that for 10 years and re-retired from Goodrich in 2004. The last year I was there one of my students made the All-State Band(He now plays with our community band) and the year after I left I was scheduled to have about 100 students in the band program 6-12.

Shortly after moving to Livingston I was asked to start our community band. I started the band and after about 15 seasons we are getting ready to start another year in September. Look for us on facebook "Livingston Area Community Band." Directing our community band has always been fun, but the last few years we have had an increase in members and that makes it even more fun. We are blessed with many excellent players therefore we are able read a lot of the great musical works.

Music has always been an important part of my family's activities. My wife Kathy was the Executive Director of the Beaumont Symphony Orchestra for 10 years before we retired. Both our children were members of the Texas All-State Band and both are A & M Graduates. They both played in the A & M Symphonic Band while they were there.

As I think back over my life there are two people other than my parents who without them I have no idea what my life would have been like. The first was the H.S. band director who drove down the dirt road in front of our house during the summer before my 7th grade year. We never had a telephone in the house I lived in until I got in college so he couldn't call me. I was playing outside in the yard barefooted with no shirt on. We had no air-conditioning.

Mr. Hugh Byrd was the director who took the time to drive out to my house to talk to me about being in the band. He was like a father to me in school.

The other person who really influenced my life was the superintendent I had while at Smiley H.S. His daughter was one of my twirlers and he went with the band on several of our spring trips. He left Smiley and eventually settled in Beaumont as Superintendent of South-Park I.S.D. Darrell Williams is the one who called me to come to South Park and serve as his Director of Music.

Both of these great people who influenced my life have passed away and the hardest job I have ever had was being invited to speak at both of their Memorial Services.
