Today's Featured Biography
Louis Fleming
Left Amarillo in 1979 for Abilene and got married Jacque in December of 1979. Earned degree in Youth Ministry and Education in May 1982.
Entered the retail world to pay for college and ended up being transferred to Amarillo.
Boss asked me if I knew where Sunset Center was. I laughed...after all growing up less than 3 blocks from it (on Westlawn), I better know where it is.
After a stint in retail at both Sunset Center and Westgate Mall, I left retail and ended up spending 13 months working in a residential treatment center for ED kids. A truly humbling and unique experience working first hand with kids who ranged from abuse victims to abusers. I saw kids from 9 to 17 whose behaviors ranged from arson to burglary to the 11 year old who was placed with us by his Probation officer for sexual assault on a younger child. It gave me a new respect for those who do that kind of work long term and a passion for working with kids.
I left there and found myself helping at a private school before returning to WTSU in 1987 to earn a degree in Math Education and History. Student taught at Sam Houston High School and was to teach a future superstar as one of my 7th graders was future Olympian Brandon Slay who would win Gold in 2000.
I decided to interview anywhere and everywhere and while on way to Midland to interview, was granted an interview with small school system called Andrews.....24 years later, I am still in Andrews.
I started out teaching remedial math, added a computer class and 10 years ago was moved to tech department and now teach straight technology classes ranging from Web design, Game Making,AP Computer Science, and Robotics. I also coach several highly successful academic teams.
3 straight top AAAA web design state champs
3 UIL Regional Champion individuals and team
1 UIL State SemiFinalist (2008)
1 UIL State Champion (2013)
5 UIL State Appearance (1999,07,08,12, 13)
6 appearances at State Programming Contest including a top ten finish in 2007.
Oldest daughter Jessica got married in June 07 and currently is an administrator/ trainer for K-12.com.
Youngest daughter Stefanie got married in 2012 and is at work on a PhD in cancer biology in Charleston, South Carolina.
Jacque teaches third grade and we are heading towards 35th anniversary.
It was good to see everyone at the reunion and now with the tragedy, it is so important to remember to reach out to those around you. None of us is guaranteed a time limit in this race.
