Raul Fernandez
Pretty cool site, thanks to Sheryl and everyone for keeping it up. Sorry I missed the 20 year reunion, maybe I'll make it to the next one.
Lots has happened since '86. I joined the Navy right out of high school. Was stationed in Orlando, San Diego and Newport, RI. I then managed to earn an NROTC scholarship. I did it for the wrong reasons, and I ended up at LSU where I had the time of my life for about 18 months, but didn't get much accomplished school-wise. Another couple of years in the Navy followed, this time Pascagoula, MS where I did parts of two Persian Gulf deployments. This was just after the first Gulf War, so I was never really in harms way.
Finally finished my military commitment, and I moved back to Chattanooga, where I got back on track at Chatt State. I played tennis for the Tigers and earned a Tennessee Scholars Scholarship to finish my degree at UT. While in K-ville, I ended up working at a record store (for waaaay toooo long as you might notice from my blog) where I met my lovely wife, Gabrielle. We've been married for eight years now, and just had our first (and last?) child, Maria Justine.
I briefly flirted with triathlons. Though I never had the guts to do an Ironman, I did do a Half-Iron distance triathlon, and had some respectable times at the Olympic distance. I still love to ride my bike, though I don't have time for the swimming and running anymore.
I am currently a teaching professional at the Chattanooga Racquet Club in Hixson. This past Spring, I was also the head tennis coach at Hixson High School. My girls did pretty well-- they beat every school in the district that wasn't a private school and my #1 was the runner-up at this year's District 6-A/AA tourney. My boys were young. I didn't even have enough to field a team, having just four freshmen (two of which had never played tennis before this year!) and a senior. I am currently in the process of building the program from the ground up. I'll be running some inexpensive camps this summer, specifically targetting kids in the Hixson area. Look for Hixson High School to be a power in tennis in the near future- ha!
