Kenneth Say

I managed to squeeze four years of college into 10 years, graduating from Central State University (now UCO) 1972. Worked for the Oklahoma Highway Dept. four and one-half years, Aetna Life and Casualty 19 years, Prudential 3 years and USPS for 15 years before retiring in 2010. Theresa and I re-connected at the 1999 reunion and married in 2009.
Between us, Theresa and I have 22 grandchildren, plus six others brought into our family by marriage or significant-otherism and one precious little baby girl who died at birth.
Theresa still brings home the bacon working in the Emergency Dept. at Norman Regional Hospital as a Registered Nurse. She obtained her BS Degree in Nursing from OU.
Our children are in Arizona, Kentucky, Florida, Texas and Oklahoma. It is difficult to get to see them all, but we try.
I have many wonderful memories of all my friends, classmates and most importantly the very caring people of Elk City. In my younger years the memories are of cross-town bicycle trips to visit Ed Cook, Jimmy Dodson, Jr. Evans, Ray Pruitt and Dick Woodman. Saturdays might find a group at the Elk, Rex or Westland theaters watching westerns and the inevitable Saturday serials. Later, that den of iniquity the pool hall worked into our schedule. Summers were spent at Ackley Park playing baseball and trying to find jobs to do that actually paid money. Carhopping at the Iceberg and seeing all the locals and travelling tourists use it as an eatery and town drag are still fresh in my mind. Who can recount schooldays without a fond remembrance of "Charley and Sue's". Living in Elk was like having 7,000 parents because they all looked out for each of us. Many times my escapades got home before I did, and the dreaded "grounding" was the result. I feel fortunate that I spent my entire school years going first to Longfellow, then the old Junior High, and finally, the "new" High School. All the teachers were great, but a few I remember best are the ones who made it the most challenging for me. Ed's dad, M. E. Copelin, Mrs. Hunt, Elizabeth Baber, Bill Matthews and of course Irene Howard come immediately to mind. After getting to Junior High was my best experience because then we all truly became classmates. Northeast joined Fairview, Longfellow and Lincoln and we became one. Theresa tells me, and I now believe it, that there were cliques in school. Those only served to separate us and make us feel different. Over the past 50 years I choose to remember that we are all more alike than different. When my family moved to Elk in 1951, I knew no one, but the neighborhood kids took me in as a friend. They were Johnnie and Janie Reynolds, Grace Yeager, Billy Ray Berncich, Charlie Stewart, Micky and Don Gibson, and later, Gene Lewallen moved in across the street. We went from being playmates to classmates and graduates. All are wonderful memories, and I look forward to renewing those friendships at our reunion in August.
