Jacquelyn Haworth Hoy

I read my bio from our 30th reunion and it stated that I liked where I was in my life at that time. It is twenty years later and I can say that I love where I am right now. I am retired from a great career in education where I was a teacher for fifteen years and a guidance counselor for over twenty years. I could not have asked for a more rewarding profession. I am still in contact with many of my former students and love to hear their adventures. I would have felt satisfied with my life as a teacher/counselor, living with my three cats and traveling with friends. But, as in everyone’s lives, there were a few detours, one being that after my mother lost most of her eyesight through macular degeneration, I decided it best she move to Columbus and live with me. What a gift this decision became. She was an amazing woman who kept everyone laughing with her stories. I often traveled with friends and my mother would stay with my sister, Linda, which enabled me to take longer trips oversea. Life was good. I am became a member of the Board of Cuyamungue Institute that is based in Santa Fe, New Mexico. We have over 500 acres of undeveloped land just north of the city. Our institute teaches and studies the effects of the mind and body while listening to a drum or rattle and taking the position of a posture found in ancient effigies and cave drawings. It is a practice I feel that allows my inner voice to be heard through all of the noise from our modern society. As I said, life was good. I had my friends, my family and my interest in anthropology filling my life. The only thing missing was a partner. I had tried marriage while in college and it just did not work. So, one afternoon, I stood on my deck overlooking the ravine and I asked the spirits to send me a partner. That may sound a bit woo woo, but that is what I did. A few months later I received an email from Ray Hoy. He and I had been physiology lab partners in Mr. Mills’ class. We never dated in school, but we talked a lot in class. Ray and I corresponded via email for a few months and then he came to Columbus to visit me. He brought his guitar and sang, and then we both sang, and soon we knew we were in love. We traveled to Sedona that summer and hiked up to Kachina Woman where he surprised me by proposing to me. He knew that he would also be marrying my mother and two cats, and he was fine with that. My mother was thrilled (she loved him, too), my cats were fine (they were 19 years old), and I was elated. When I told my sister, she suggested we get married where we met, DeVilbiss. And, that is what we did. We were able tie the knot in Mr. Mills’ old room. Since then, my mother died at the age of 90, the two cats died at the age of 22. We have spent most of our time traveling, taking cruises, and visiting with Ray’s son, a Captain in the Army at Fort Hood, and visiting his daughter who is a web designer for University of Maryland. I have two blogs, one Journeying Jackie and my favorite, Family Trove. And, I must not forget our two cats we rescued, Molly and her brother Ary, who moved in with us when we found we had a mouse in the house. Life is good.
