Today's Featured Biography
Nancy Preis
I have had a varied and interesting career. After a B.A. at U.Toledo, spent a year working in Ann Arbor for a hospital. Ran off to England with a friend, ran out of money, and came home to get an MBA at UT. Taught for 2 years at UT, then went on to U. Michigan for a Ph.D. in Business, major in accounting (of all things). My father was so pleased that I finally saw the light. Had 9 wonderful years as a professor at Columbia University in NY, teaching only MBA students, for which I will probably burn in hell for a very long time. I helped create the generation of investment bankers in the 1980's who have created havoc in the markets. I went further astray by leaving Columbia to join an investment banking team doing leveraged buyouts: another karmic lifetime in hell no doubt. I took a huge leap of faith and exited my comfort zone in 1991 to take on management of a manufacturing company in Florida. I knew absolutely nothing about the highly engineered products, but learned quickly and built the company into a mini-empire of 3 corporations. I retired in 2016 and returned to my first love, the arts. Continuing my mother's legacy of volunteer work, I was on the board of the Florida Orchestra and the St. Petersburg Opera. I run a small private foundation that has distributed money to NW Ohio for 27 years. I still usher and do garden tours for local organizations. I am also the general director of Opera in the Ozarks, in Eureka Springs, AR. It's a summer training program for singers with production of 3 full operas plus a children's opera. I am responsible for the overall operation of the facility but not the artistic choices. I book all the outreach gigs and special events and hire the staff.
My father died in 1981, mother in 2007 (at age 97). My sister (Class of 1961) divides her time between kids in Seattle and Minneapolis; she has 7 grandchildren.
My life is filled with love from friends and family and there is not enough time to do all that I have on my plate. I have traveled a fair amount, most recently in Cambodia and South Africa, and want to do more. Best thing I have done with my money is commission works of music and art, two of each so far. It's surprisingly affordable, very satisfying, and enduring.
Never bored, never get enough sleep, and having a great ride through life. I intend to slide into the grave (many years from now) all used up and with a big smile.

"Just discovered your product today while trying to locate classmates ahead of our 50th reunion in 2020. The fact that you did this in a noncommercial manner in a world where everything has a price tag deserves recognition and respect, in my view.
Thank you and good luck in all your endeavors."
