Mary Rudzianski Kates

Graduated Mills College of Education, 1968; New York Law School, 1983; Taught nursery school, kindergarten, 1st grade in New York, PennsyLvania and Germany. Married Brian Kates, HHS '64, in 1968; separated, 1996; divorced, 2002. One child, Elizabeth, born 1976.

I taught school for five years or so before Elizabeth was born. When I was ready to go back to work, I realized I would need my Master's so I decided to do what I always had wanted to do - go to law school. I loved it. I was very active in Moot Court. I became chairperson of the NYLS Moot Court Board. For over 13 years, I also administered the ABA's moot court program.

I worked in the corporate legal department of two insurance companies before trying my hand at solo practice in Manhattan. Unfortunately, solo practice is a tough road under the best of circumstances and after five years, I decided that it was not a viable thing.

I have been in retail sales since 1995. I moved to Dover in 1999. I live in little Victorian in the old section of town near Wesley College. We were sitting on the front porch one evening and my neighbor was telling us that "the Hohberger house" down the block had been sold. (I knew it as the Layton house which was what it had been when my friend lived in Dover many years ago.) I said, "You mean Todd Hohberger????" Todd is here in Dover, too.

For the past year, I have been able to combine my two loves, teaching and law, by being an adjunct professor at Wesley College. I teach in their adult studies program in Wilmington or their paralegal program in Dover.

In my spare(?)time I enjoy gardening, reading, exploring the Delmarva area and redecorating the house one room at a time.

I have spoken with Suzanne DeRosa Bode and Tony Migliore (HHS '62) who I found through Classmates.com. (I refuse to pay $36 to send emails, so I had to track them down through MaBell.) Suzie is in Florida. Tony is in Nashville. My brother, John, (HHS '68) is alive and well and living in Pennsylvania with his second wife, Joyce. They are both retired from the Air Force. Joyce had her own physical therapy business until she retired last year. John is our family computer person.
