Following graduation from NBHS, I attended N.C. State and graduated in Mechanical Engineering in 1962. After joining the ROTC Program there, I was commissioned as a Lt. in the Air Force and was stationed at Patrick AFB, FL after graduation. While in the Air Force, I worked on the Atlas and Gemini Programs at Cape Canaveral. This certainly proved to be an interesting assignment. Who could have asked for a better place to serve?!
After leaving the AF, I was employed by North American Rockwell for about a year before joining NASA. I enjoyed a long career with NASA at the Kennedy Space Center (KSC), FL working on the Shuttle Program, Space Payloads, and Finance in areas of Project Engineering, etc. It was exciting to have worked with many super nice people. I retired in 1998 as the Chief Financial Officer for NASA at Kennedy Space Center, Florida. I had been selected to that position by former Astronaut Bob Crippen who was the KSC Center Director at that time.
I am so fortunate and thankful to have survived stomach cancer which was first diagnosed in October 1988. This diagnosis was followed by surgery which removed most of my stomach and months of chemo therapy. At the time, I weighed almost 200 lbs. but have remained at about 165 lbs. since then. In my retirement, I really enjoy playing golf at least three times a week with a great group of guys. I also have kept busy by serving as the Treasurer of the LaCita Haciendas Homeowners Board for the past 8 years.
Ruth (Brown) and I were married in Raleigh on January 29, 1961 at Tabernacle Baptist Church. In just a few more days, we will celebrate our 53rd anniversary. Ruth also worked for NASA after graduating from Peace College in Raleigh. She is two years younger than myself and retired four years before I did. How did she manage that?!! It's an understatement to say we are so fortunate and blessed to have each other and to have such a wonderful family.
We have one daughter (Diane) who was married to avid golfer Terry Thompson on September 3, 1998 at the Capitol Building in Tallahassee, FL. It's amazing to realize that they will be celebrating their 26th anniversary this year (2014). Their children are Terry, Jr. (T.J.) and Delaney. Diane and her family live in Tallahassee. She and Terry both graduated from Florida State University. Diane is in Management with the Department of Transportation for the state of Florida. She is an amateur geneaologist and has recently been enjoying performing professional photography. Terry has been involved with a long career in sales.
Our avid golfer son (David, Jr.)is married to the beautiful former Jackie Roberts. They were married on April 8, 2008 at the Railroad Station in Norman, OK (second marriage for both) and will celebrate their 6th anniversary in 2014. They live in Titusville, FL as do we. David, Jr.'s children (Austin, Lauren, & Calin) were all born in Florida. Jackie's daughters (Megan, Tori, & Kenze) were all born in Oklahoma. David, Jr. graduated from the University of Central Florida in Mechanical Engineering and has also enjoyed a career in engineering with NASA at KSC. Jackie graduated from the University of Oklahoma in Business Administration & Management and worked for the University for many years. She now works at home and is a creative genius.
Grandchildren Details...! (Not happy and proud much are we...?)
Jackie's daughter Megan (25) graduated as a Dean's List nurse from the University of Central Florida (UCF) in December 2012. She now works for Parrish Medical Center here in Titusville, FL. Megan was married to Todd Moseley on December 17, 2011 at Hope Community Church. Our second beautiful and sweet great granddaughter (London) was born to them on May 18, 2013.
David, Jr's son Austin (23) is on the Dean's List in his second year of Medical College at UCF after graduating from Florida State University in 2012. He was selected to his UCF Medical College class of 150 from a field of 3,500+. Austin was a member of the National Honor Society and graduated as the 2008 Salutatorian of Titusville High School. Austin is also a talented percussionist and loves golf along with the rest of his family.
Diane's son T.J. (23) graduated from the Fire Academy in Tallahassee, FL in 2012 and has also graduated from EMT school there. T.J. is employed with Wakulla County (just outside Tallahassee) as a Fireman-EMT. He will be following the EMT program with Paramedics soon. T.J. is also an avid golfer and played on the golf team during his high school years.
Jackie's daughter Tori (20) is the mother of our beautiful first great granddaughter Keely (born on 4-8-11). Unfortunately, Tori and Dylan are separated now. Tori and Keely are presently living in Oklahoma. After recently graduating from medical business studies, Tori now works in a medical facility there.
David, Jr.'s daughter Lauren (20) is a very talented artist and is a Junior at UCF. She is also on the Dean's List and is majoring in art and graphic design. Lauren graduated from Titusville High School in June 2012 and received her AA from Brevard Community College at the same time after completing Dual Enrollment. Lauren has won several art competitions, was a National Honor Society member, played trombone while in the THS band, and was a member of the jazz band also.
David, Jr.'s daughter Cailin (19) is a Senior at Titusville High School, is President of the National Honor Society there, and is a contender now for her 2014 class Valedictorian. She is also Dual Enrolled at Brevard Community College (now Eastern Florida State College); and as she says, "I've never felt the sting of a 'B'." ;-) In 2012, she was ranked No. 1 on the tennis team and is presently becoming an avid golfer. Cailin is a percussionist in the THS band (also Drum Major), plays in the jazz band, and is first chair as a violinist in the THS orchestra. She often plays at special events in central Florida in Ensemble groups.
Diane's daughter Delaney (18) is a Senior at Crawfordville High School (suburb of Tallahassee). She is a beautiful, talented horse woman (loves all things horses including their care, riding, and jumping) and played clarinet in the high school band. Delaney is currently becoming very interested in archery. She enjoys writing and may one day write a best seller..! Go Delaney! Keep us in the style we would like to become accustomed to gal. ;-)
Jackie's daughter McKenze (16) is a Sophmore at Titusville High School. She was selected to the National Jr. Honor Society in middle school and anticipates the same in high school. Kenze also enjoys art and is very creative. She plays as first chair trombone in the THS band. Last year, she played on the THS girl's softball team.
