Today's Featured Biography

Marceline Geelen

Okay, I copied my life from what I admitted to my dutch school website. I hope to translate it sometime in the near future. Please ignore any grammatical mistakes on my behalf. It's been a while...

The translation:
Hard to write something down. Tend to write a kind of cv (currilum vitae) but that's so boring. As far as work concerns first I went abroad three times: (Reims, France; Brussels, and Antwerp, Belgium) and my heart still lies at travelling. In the meantime I've become the proud mother of two beautiful sons (Justin; 2001) and Liam (2003) and 8 years together with Etienne. Bought a house (2003), getting homey and vacation, even real travel is just not an option right now. UNFORTUNATELY. I have a great job as a final editor with - believe it or not - a gossip magazine. Luckily I never go to parties myself, just read other people's stories and weekly take care of a 'shopping'-area. Love to do that. Used to do it in the past for a women's magazine. Kinda pr, it goes with me. I live in Zaandam, met my partner Etienne there, whom is also from the south of the country, and feel well here after nine years.

Schools I went to:
In de Bremmen - Haelen;
Together with my neighbour friend Frank, who's mother delivered him almost the same time my mother delivered me, I went to elementary school, hand in hand. Unfortunately I stayed at this school only 2 years, because the next, the St. Franciscusschool was not a big succes.

Franciscusschool, HAELEN    1976 - 1980
Not such good memories of this school. Children are very harsh. I'm glad I survived more then well but hope that my kids will have a better memory of alimentary school then I have. Many concrete names are painfull but I remember many names out of the blue: Jacqueline Keunen (daughter of the butcher), Freddie Salemans (son of the hairdresser?), Evalien Op 't Veld (nice girl, seems to be married with kids), Marion, Esther Haens (very popular with the guys but still friendly), Margot, Liesbeth Geraets (daughter of the owner of the green store), Frien Linssen (of the hair dresser?), the tall Martien Linssen, Roel (later a butcher himself), the beautiful Annemarie Berends whom came into our life later with her unbelievably clear voice, Dylian Wijenberg (beautiful and sweet girl - just as me too much bullied), the twins Esther and Helene (nice to look at but no real Einsteins), Juan, Thomas van Rooij (who didn't experience an easy time either), at a certain point Henny from the bar at the Roermondse weg who seemed much older and more experienced then us blossoming teenagers and I'm sure more people will come to my mind if I think more about it. Just wait until I find the pictures someday and scan them! Friends are hard to remember: maybe only boys like Jerome Verstappen (with his dear sister Nicole) and Frank Koelemij (was he even in our school?) because in general everybody preferred to be friends with the popular types; and if you ever were persona grata you dropped your other 'pathetic' classmates in a flash.

St Ursula, HORN    1980 - 1982
Those first two years were not a succes either. The school was too big, nothing for me at the time. Later... well, then it was different.

MAVO Leudal, HEYTHUYSEN    1982 - 1984
Here I went through many school- and class parties, got my first French kiss in this period and was often, as my father jokingly said, hanging out my 'five Musketiers' from Neer, (Leon Custers, Frank Saelemans, Jos Weustenrath, Patrick Thomassen en Laurens 'Pie' Verheijden. Best friend in this period: Ingrid Simons, also from Neer, the rural village, the close community, where a large part of my life found place. Hey, my mother is from Neer, what can you do? Ingrid went 'steady' and soon Astrid Moors followed her as partner in crime. Together we went new wave. And back to St. Ursula. Hi Astrid and guys.

St Ursula, HORN    1984 - 1986
Smoking in the bicycle-basement, find out who you are, wanting to belong to a group, major puberty! Starting here I began to live! And I met my best friend of all times here: Chantal Awick. We still have at least weakly contact. Also good memories of Astrid Moors, Maarten van den Arend, 'the guys from Heel' (no, nothing naughty) and getting to know the finer parts of life...

RAYTOWN SOUTH HIGHSCHOOL, KANSAS CITY, MO    1986 - 1987
Great experience, this year of highschool. How simplistic it sounds, America is just like the movies. And when I was there the last time in 1998 I still had the bestranging feeling that I entered the tv-set... But still, I found a lot of friends for life, partied a lot just like a dutch woman should and found a deep love for many excentric, dear, strange and wonderful 'birds' in the US of A.

Interhostess school, EINDHOVEN    1987 - 1988
In the beginning I experienced this as a super preppy school where I didn't feel like I belonged as an ex-new waver. Very soon though I realised that appearances betray: here as well I found cool girls, especcially Nancy, Esther and Susan of Suzanne (sorry!). Good memories of a gala in hotel St. Pierre, going out at Stratems Eind and walking through the parc drunk as hell and urinating in public. Bad, bad girls. In the long run it got me a great job practice placement in France (Reims) and even a job until I went back to college. So finally I did learn my languages...
Nancy, Esther and Suzanne, if and when your read this: in love, engaged or married? And most importantly: did you travel a lot?

Fontys Hogeschool voor Journalistiek, TILBURG    1989 - 1993
Home bar of my school: Bet Koole! Had a fantastic time in Tilburg, party-on, found wonderful friends for life and learned a lot, very much, about getting conscient - of injustice all over the world, philosophy, poetry, journalism and of course Love. Best friend and partner for years: Michiel van Hinsberg, master writer. Still in touch with Arjin van As, Jasperien van Weerdt, Manou van de Zande, Evelyn Strube, Marie-Jose Godding, Bas Vossen, Martijn Fooy, Natascha van Heesch.

KUN - Taalwetenschap, STP, NIJMEGEN    1993 - 1994
Studied Arab here. What a theoretical load of crap. Did find two wonderful friends (Mascha en Michael - the last one got married recently) during this one year of university.
