Today's Featured Biography
Michael Ernest
I was born in Baltimore, but lived on Martha's Vineyard, MA in 1944 and experienced the Great Atlantic Hurricane in September of 1944. Later we moved to Newport News, VA and finally back to Dundalk, MD after my father was discharged from the US Navy then to Baltimore City (1947). My earliest job was when I was about 7 years old and distributed circulars for the Westway movie theater (the owner was a friend of my grandparents). I received a free movie pass (worth 20 cents) and a pass for some candy (5 cents). Talk about cheap labor! I attended PS 232 for grades 1-5. We then moved to Catonsville in 1952 and I attended Westchester Consolidated School in Oella for grades 6-7. I had a job working for a delivery man for Greenspring dairy. Most of the job was on saturdays (about 8-10 hours) delivering milk and taking payment. For my labors,I received $3, two hamburgers and a milkshake for lunch and a quart of chocolate milk to take home. I played two years of pony league baseball for Bartgis Brothers team which won the league championship in 1955. That same year I broke my left wrist playing a pickup baseball game. I had my arm in a cast for 6 weeks and a sling for another 6 weeks. I attended Catonsville Junior High for grades 8-9. I attended and graduated from Catonsville High School. While in high school and first year of college, i worked as a carhop at Champs restaurant-making some money (15 cents/hour plus tips) and meeting some girls. During my college days, i subbed for the manager on his day off with no change in pay-wow). My high school days were uneventful except for having the top CHS score in the nationwide Latin exam (I was in the 90th percentile) in the 10th grade. In the 11th grade, i did well in the exam (85th percentile). More eventful was dating a number of girls, but probably best not to say much about that! After attending community college for a year, my sister introduced to my wife to be. I then took a job as a lab technician with Hynson, Westcott and Dunning the maker of mercurochrome. I worked for them for a year and half and married. I then moved to a larger corporation as a lab technician and started to attend night school. Over course of 17 years of night (some saturday daytime) school, i earned 4 degrees. One year I actually attended two different schools in the same semesters, and several years of grueling summer school sessions! Once I received my first bachelor degree, I was promoted to professional scientist and began working my way up the technical ladder. I traveled quite a bit on business in the US and Canada, as well as a couple trips to Germany. I authored or co-authored a number of published articles in scientific journals and some were presented orally at scientific meetings. I am the inventor or co-inventor on more than 20 issued US and Foreign patents. The most personally memorable invention was the discovery and method of preparing a previously unknown platinum compound which was manufactured and ultimately used to make millions of dollars worth of products. i have ben a ardent woodworker and have made many pieces of furniture for our household as well for our three great kids. Barb and I have vacationed in many states as well as Canada. While I leave flower gardening up to Barb, I have continued to put in an annual vegetable garden.
I have been playing on two senior softball teams since being retired.

"Just discovered your product today while trying to locate classmates ahead of our 50th reunion in 2020. The fact that you did this in a noncommercial manner in a world where everything has a price tag deserves recognition and respect, in my view.
Thank you and good luck in all your endeavors."
