Today's Featured Biography
Heidi Lovett
After 23 years in St. Petersburg, FL, I recently moved to the DC area (Jan 2007) to take a position with the NOAA Fisheries Service at their headquarters office (Silver Spring, MD). Unlike short moves of years past, this involved my young family at a somewhat stressful time: I was interviewed and accepted the job while on maternity leave after the birth of my second son. Life has had different challenges after 40!
I left single life a mere 4 years ago (Nov 2003). At the 20th reunion I was likely talking about work, travel, sailing, a sailboat race to Cuba (1999), and sunny life in general in St. Petersburg (I likely had a tan too!). Now life with Rand (Randall) swirls mostly around our two little guys who are moving, growing, talking, and understanding the most amazing things at dizzying speeds. They both recently had birthdays: Isaac is 3 and David is 1. They are pure joy (well, most of the time). Actually, we have been lucky that they are usually happy guys with very outgoing personalities, which allows us to take them most everywhere. They have not led sheltered lives in their short 3 and 1 years. They've mastered cuteness and flirting very quickly.
Sailing is a thing of the past at the moment, but we are enjoying lots of sights, museums, events, and the beautiful parks of the Greater Washington DC area. Though I do miss a lot of friends and the 'community' of St. Petersburg, in which I was very involved over the years: civic activities (helped start a great farmer's market that is now rumored to be the largest in the whole southeast and was treasurer for a friend's run for City Council), music (booking music for the market), art, theater (longtime American Stage volunteer), sailing, environmentalism, and other progressive issues. The one thing that made this move easier is that I already knew a lot of folks working at this agency and other sister agencies under NOAA. We get up to Sharon at least 1-2 times a year to visit my family which are all still here or nearby. My brother Laurence and his wife Andrea (which some of you know) are bringing up their daughters Johanna (Joey or Jojo) and Rebekah (Ricki) in the house that we grew up in on Bay Road. Little brother Michael is following in my footsteps and marrying late (at 38) next month to another Sharonite, Tobey Ludlow (I think SHS Class of 1992??). We are really happy for them. They're close by in their new house in Norwood. My dad died in 2002 (sadly of Parkinson's Disease), but mom is well and moved to Delray Beach, FL.
The pace at work is a little slower than my former position (9 years with a marine fisheries/science consultancy), but it's not bad NOT having to bring work home, and my supervisors and colleagues are great. I still work in fisheries management, with a little policy, and interact/liaise with the eight Regional Fishery Management Councils around the nation, as well as senior staff at NOAA Fisheries (and more lawyers than ever before). I also try to stay abreast of many of the U.S. and international ocean and marine issues. I try to take advantage of many of the benefits of having a federal job. The most used one right now is inexpensive fees at the gym here in my building; I enjoy two yoga classes a week.
I look forward to seeing everyone at reunion, or on my next trip home. If anyone plans a trip through DC, we can make you feel welcome, and help you navigate all the fun stuff to do around here.

"Just discovered your product today while trying to locate classmates ahead of our 50th reunion in 2020. The fact that you did this in a noncommercial manner in a world where everything has a price tag deserves recognition and respect, in my view.
Thank you and good luck in all your endeavors."
