Today's Featured Biography
Ron Braet
Well, I'm sure anyone reading this is probably surprised I have a bio out here at ALL! I know I certainly am. :) That's because the stereotypes I carried in high school -- an underachieving stoner who enjoyed showering with other guys a little too much -- were all true. I really hated myself throughout high school and beyond for many years, coming very close to destroying myself (literally) on two occasions. In the interim, I played with many bands, one of which was a LONG stint with a country group who played a place called The Haymarket Lounge in Blue Springs, MO. I fit right in, as you might imagine. And you know, it was right around that period when I finally realized the people in my past have no bearing on the quality of my present or future, so I cleaned up (10 years plus in AA now), got some JCCC and University of Phoenix courses under my belt, and went to work for several companies developing my interest in computers for the next few years. Finally, I ended up at Sprint in 1998 working on their Year 2000 conversion project (I'd never in my life seen the chaos that can ensue in a meeting full of 20 turbo-caffeinated micro-managers -- but believe me, oh....my....God). Really wanting to dig into the more practical end of IT -- learning the stuff home users deal with every day -- I got hired on at Sprint's helpdesk in 2000 and worked there through 2003, having worked up to the role of trainer. It was great place to get exposed to a broad range of technologies and how those affect everyday folks like us, and around 2003 is when the layoffs got so bad I began worrying about my job. As if on cue, I was recruited by a smaller but successful Fortune 200 company, Epiq Systems, as a software analyst. It was a more rewarding step up in every sense, and I've been very happy working there now for close to two years. Aside from that, I'm playing piano and Hammond B-3 organ for a local band called Risky Shift (website www.riskyshift.com), I like trying to stay in shape these days, and I've been caring for my mother who was recently diagnosed with cancer. Oh and Idol...gotta' love Idol!
Keep writing, everyone. It's been great catching up with you, even if only indirectly.
