Today's Featured Biography
Jerelyn Cockriel Leinweber
I can't believe where all the years have gone! Poof! And suddenly it is 2014.
I graduated from San Jose State University with a degree in English, a Certificate in Technical Writing, and a minor in Business. I was an at-home mom since the birth of our son, and have now formally "retired" as a department secretary, having worked primarily at universities and local government. I may go back to work part-time this fall, but I'm also considering grad school. Hah! Wish I could figure out what I want to do when I grow up, or at least before social security!
The last few years have been extremely challenging in terms of the loss of loved ones. The toughest, most personal loss was the death of my wonderful husband Gary from cancer in December 2012. We'd been together for over 30 years and married for nearly 24 years at the time of his passing. There's a lesson there - make the most of the time you're given! Gary had retired as Fire Marshal for the City of Mountain View, CA (part of Silicon Valley) and pursued a second career passion before his death - teaching high school math. His students, fellow school district and MVFD colleagues, old high school classmates and other friends and neighbors were a great source of inspiration and strength to him and to our family.
Our son, Johnny, reached the rank of Eagle Scout and was a high school honors student. He is now a sophomore at Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo - lucky kid! Such a lovely part of the central California coast. We're doing well, trying to get used to this major loss in our lives. It is good to have time to ourselves to heal and grow.
I'm keeping busy with some very supportive friends, volunteering at a local school and with scouts, quilt guild activities, traveling. I also try to do a bit of birdwatching. I really want to do more birdwatching! Thank you, Mr. Colyn, for doing such a great job teaching us about birds.
I appreciate the time we had in school in McPherson, both the good and the not-so-good. I am not sure if I'll be in McPherson for the reunion as our summer plans are still in limbo. If not, I hope you all have a wonderful time at the reunion. Thank you to everyone on the committee for their hard work!
Best regards,
Jerelyn Cockriel Leinweber
