Today's Featured Biography
Joe Conley
I began working at NASA Dryden Flight Research Center as an intern while attending U of I in aero/astro engineering. Dryden is where NASA flight tests advanced aircraft / concepts and I had a blast working there for most of the 1980s on control system design and analysis, flight simulation, control room operations, and flight data analysis.
I met my wife-to-be (Kathy) in engineering grad school in 1988 at UT Austin and transferred to NASA Ames Research Center in the San Francisco Bay Area soon after we were married in 1990. I held many technical and management positions at Ames and then retired after 36 years in 2019.
Highlights of my NASA career include a year at NASA Langley supporting the High Speed Research Program. My daughter Sarah was born nearby in Williamsburg, VA. In 1999, I attended Stanford’s Sloan Executive Fellowship Program. The following year, we went to D.C. where I worked as an advisor to Senator Richard J. Durbin.
In 2007, we moved to Strasbourg France where I served as the Director for International Space University's Space Studies Program. Edward and Sarah learned french there the hard way by attending the French public school system. Madame Gore would be proud of them. We certainly are.
Kathy works at NASA Ames, specializing in thermal protection systems for re-entry vehicles. We still live in the San Francisco Bay Area where I run a research program for Lockheed Martin. Edward got his B.S. Chemistry from UC Santa Cruz and a Ph. D. in Material Science & Engineering from UC Davis. Sarah's BS is in Mechanical Engineering from UC Santa Barbara and she also has an M.S. degree in Mech Eng from UC Davis. Various combinations of us like to hike, run, swim, kayak, play soccer, read, and game.
