Today's Featured Biography

Ron Samuelson
I just love to read these Bio's on everyone, 50 years comes fast.
Upon my graduation from FHS, in fact 10 days after that I joined the US Army, Vietnam was still going strong. Went to Missouri, Fort Leonard to do my Basic Training then onto Weapons School at Aberdeen Proving Ground, MD. From there was Fort Benning, Georgia for 3 years.
For the first 3 years I was basically in a infantry position, oh, that was cool but thinking ahead it didn't have a future. So looked for other positions in the military, came across the JAG Corps, (Judge Advocate General, and not like it is on TV) that the law side of the military, you know, lawyers, criminal law, civil law, litigation in the long run I became a paralegal and court reporter. Best thing I ever did was take typing in Mrs. Ritzinger's class for 3 years. I remember she moved me right in front of her desk cause I would be talking to all the girls in class I became a very good typist there and in the Army. So my next 27 years in the Army was in a office or courtroom.
I won't go into each assignment I had but put in 30 active years, in fact, 30 years, 3 months and 11 days, if you want the hours and min, we will chat later. I spent 16 of those years overseas. 4 years in Korea, in that 4, one was on the DMZ, that trip was very interesting, I was in charge of 15 guys and we rode up and down the DMZ from 11PM till 6am, sometimes it was 20 - 25 below, that's when I first encountered frostbite, not good.
Now onto Germany, spent 8 years there. Learned to speak and read German. Opens many doors for you, as they say when in Rome, do the what the Romans do. In fact we are heading over there 15 December to visit our son Matthew. While we were in Germany we visited every free block nation there and I made a special trip to Moscow, that was interesting.
OK that was Europe, I was thinking that was enough travel. That was in 84, just about the time Barbara and I met all over again after we had left each other for 15 years, she went her way an I went mine, sort of like the movie An Officer and a Gentleman, with Richard Gere. Every class reunion I would come back to Freeport and would go to her house to see what she was up to and on the 15th, we met all over again.
We were married soon after our 15 reunion and every 2 years we had a child. So one day in Washington DC, The Pentagon called me. They wanted me to go to Hawaii, not for a visit but reassignment. I remember I told Barb that night we have never been on a honeymoon. I said I can take her on a honeymoon now but it's going to be for 4 years in Hawaii, so off we went.
I reached the rank of Sergeant Major, can't get any higher otherwise you become a General, Ha Ha, not really. We came back to Texas to retire. Got bored went to a job interview and ran the San Antonio Court House for the next 10 years, there's another retirement, not doing so bad.
We moved back to Freeport to be with Barb's family cause we had nothing in San Antonio. Really didn't want to come back to Freeport to shovel snow.
So now we bought a place in Brooksville, Florida, 30 miles north of Tampa on the Gulf side, right on the 9th green. We are Snowbirds 1 Oct - 1 May. Then come back to good ole Freeport during the summer months.
I joined the military to see the world and to see other cultures. You never know what you have in the good ole USA until you see what is elsewhere and I have seen it. So there you have it, hope you enjoy yourself at the Reunion, we put a lot of work into it.
