Today's Featured Biography
Michael Coats
After graduation, I enrolled in the Milwaukee School of Engineering. I graduated from MSOE in May of 1973 with a BS Degree in Electrical Engineering. I married Dainne Senn in June of 1973. We moved to Washington D.C. area where I went to work for the Rural Electrification Administration as a Distribution and Transmission Engineer.
After two years, I resigned my position to pursue a career in education. I attended Bob Jones University for a year studying education. In the fall of 1976, I took my first teaching position at a private Christian school.
After eighteen years and three schools, I returned to engineering. I worked for a consulting engineer for six months and for a company in Beloit for eighteen months. I then returned to teaching and taught for two more Christian schools, finished my masters degree, and finished my education career while teaching for the Belvidere school district.
During this time, Dianne and I had three sons. They have grown, married, and provided us with eight grandchildren, five boys and three girls. Family get togethers are difficult because the family is widely scattered. One reason for this is, two of our boys are in the Air Force and they live wherever the Air Force wants them to live. We have enjoyed traveling.
I retired from teaching in 2011, after thirty-two years of full time teaching. During that time I taught at five different private Christian schools and one public school district. I now say that I am theoretically retired. I explain it as being retired because I no longer teach full time, but I am theoretically retired because I now substitute. I currently sub at five different school districts, one of which is Freeport High.
On December 5, 2020, my wife Dianne, after fighting Frontal Temporal Dementia for three years, passed away. During our marriage, she proved herself to be a real trooper. She fought several medical battles. They included the birth of our three children, none of the deliveries were really easy, hypothyroidism, cancer, and COVID. With God's grace, she beat each of those. The one battle that she did not win was FTD. My comment is, that evening God decided He wanted one more excellent alto in His choir. One day, I will get to hear her sing again.
On Flag day of 2021, our ninth grand child was born, another girl. That brings our grandchildren total to five grandsons and four granddaughters.
On November 5, 2021, Our oldest natural grandchild, Jamie, married Kelly. They met while attending college together in California. The wedding was in her home state, Mississippi. They spent about 3 years in Texas where Jamie's first job was. On January 24, 2024 their first child, Judah, was born. My foster granddaughter, I keep forgetting the word foster when I talk about her, has two children. That now makes my count 3 children, 9 grandchildren, and now, 3 great grandchildren. I have agreed to sub at the same three school districts again this year.

"Just discovered your product today while trying to locate classmates ahead of our 50th reunion in 2020. The fact that you did this in a noncommercial manner in a world where everything has a price tag deserves recognition and respect, in my view.
Thank you and good luck in all your endeavors."
