Mark Fryer

Hello. Hard to believe it’s been almost 50-years since that evening on June 5, 1968 since Jim Cole spoke on, “Difficulties of Today and Tomorrow;” Almer Mandt, “The Dreams of Today;” David Dotlich, “The Dreams of Tomorrow;” and Jim Skyrms, “The Need to Dream.” I wonder if they still have those speeches?
I went on to HCC for a year thinking I wanted to be a computer programmer. I learned that wasn’t for me. I then joined Uncle Sam’s yacht club for four years. Never served one minute on a ship. But I did get to spend five months in Pensacola, FL. I got married after Morse Code school; then shipped out for a two-year stint in Okinawa, Japan and spent one year in Adak, Alaska. We could go outside and almost see Russia. I can still copy the “Code.” Did you know that the Russian alphabet has 31 characters?
After being discharged, I went to work at Economy Fire & Casualty for 16 years, working in Human Resources. Then I worked at Furst-McNess for six years, during which time I earned my BS in management from Cardinal Stritch University, and six years at Woods Equipment Co. in Oregon, IL. Then I worked (all in HR) in Indiana, Georgia and ended up in the Cheesehead state for eight years. We are now back in the “Port.” We will celebrate our 48th wedding anniversary in October.
We have two children, Adam, 38, living in Chicago and Michelle, 29, living in Freeport with her husband.
I’ve been retired for five years. I always say if you don’t have hobbies, don’t retire. But I do. . . woodworking, fly fishing, gardening and genealogy.
I am currently helping locate classmates for our reunion in September. It is a challenge but rewarding. I look forward to catching up with everyone. It’s a great time in our lives.
