Today's Featured Biography
Douglas Shaw
I started school at Plainview elementary in kindergarten with Janis Rankin, Bill Staats, Tom Grigsby, and Bill Fauntleroy. My father died and my mother remarried and we moved to Tujunga on Gish St. I went to Pinewood elementary in the 5th grade and became friends with Al Rogers, Pete Crosby, Eddie LaVal,George McClure and Dan Addison. We all went to Verdugo in the 7th grade.
Upon graduation I enlisted in the Navy and went to San Diego boot camp on Aug. 11, 1954. I was on a sea plane tender turned atomic laboratory during my service and went to the south pole and saw all of the A-bomb blasts plus the first hydrogen bomb at Aniwetauk. My rheumatoid arthritis of the spine started while I was in the navy .
When I got out of the Navy I started junior college on the GI Bill at Shasta JC in Redding, CA. I transferred after a year to Cal Poly at San Luis Obispo and got my bachelors in Architectural Engineering three years later.
I then started to travel to get Architectual experience. I moved to Denver, CO and worked for an Architect, I then went to Miami, FL to work, then to Washington D.C. to work, I then went to Stockholm, Sweden and worked for an Architect. I then moved to Spain for a half of year then returned to Long Beach, CA. I then moved to Palo Alto, CA until 1970. I then moved to Santa Barbara, CA and opened my own office. Two years later there was a building moratorium and with no work coming in I accepted a job as Project Architect on the new ski resort Elkhorn at Sun Valley.
I stayed in Sun Valley until 1978 when a car accident broke my neck. I was paralyzed from the neck down for a month and in the hospital for 5 months. I retired to Mesa, AZ for a year and then moved back to Palo Alto. I met and married my wife Judy there in 1983, we were divorced in 1993.
I retired in 1999 and bought a winter place in Borrego Springs, CA. I have a small Shih Tzu dog and plan on spending the summers in Sun Valley, ID and the winters in Borrego Springs, CA.

Thank you and good luck in all your endeavors."
