Today's Featured Biography
Sherry Holloway
Since leaving high school, I have certainly been involved in life and enjoyed our intriguing country in fascinating ways. I married a man shortly after attending Samford University. I followed him to various states, as he coached high school football, while finishing my teaching degree. Once completed, we landed ourselves in Tallahassee, Florida with the Seminoles. As graduate assistants there, he coached football at FSU under Bobby Bowden and Mark Richt, and I taught classes in the Sports Management & Marketing department. Our son, Brookes (now 13), came along within that year. We divorced soon afterwards.
I moved back to Alabama a short while, teaching at Springville Elementary one year. Although I loved that area, the Seminoles kept calling me back. I returned to Florida to complete my Masters and begin my PhD work at FSU in the Sports Mktg/Mngmt/Adm department. Burned out from teaching and looking for more pay, I was led to Boston, Massachusetts as Administrative Manager for Metromedia Fiber Network. What a change of pace! The money was better. The beauty of the Northeast was incredible. My son and I absolutely loved being on our own and away from the typical South.
God must have had His almighty purpose to draw me back to the southern winds, though. After being single for seven years at that point, I met a man there from Louisiana. He wanted desperately to go "back home", having had enough of the harsh cold. I was just getting ready to settle in and plant some roots in Mass, but, again, I followed my man once we married. After two short years and a daughter, Isabella (now 3), we divorced. After attempting to work things out for the past three years, I had a third child, Phelan (nearly a year old). As I mentioned, God has a purpose. Once you make plans, He certainly switches your gears.
I am single. It's a love/hate situation altogether, but someone has to do it. I have lived in Alabama, California, Michigan, Massachusetts, Louisiana, and Florida. I am extremely blessed to have my three wonderful children, and to be back in Alabama (now Odenville) near my family. I owned a marina/tackle/grocery store out on Warrior River for two years. It was open seven days a week, sixteen hours a day. Since being a mother takes precedence over ANYTHING, I work out of my home now. I believe, if ever blessed with the opportunity, a woman's job is with her children/family first. Having that quality/quantity time with these kids has meant the world to me. I hope to teach at the college-level again some day, once these little ones have time to grow. Should public schools get any worse, though, I plan to begin a community based home-schooling program in Odenville or wherever my roots have been planted at that time. This would involve approximately five students learning cooperatively together versus one student learning alone at home. What do you think?
I am new to the Odenville area, having only lived here three months. I do volunteer work throughout my community for Boy Scouts of America and for the Alabama School of Fine Arts, in which Brookes attends the 8th grade in the Creative Writing department. Isabella is enjoying her dance class during the week, and learning to be a little princess.....more like little bossy butt. Finally, Phelan is "all boy", keeping us in stitches throughout our day/night. What a character! His raspy voice sounds like Donald Duck.
I look forward to meeting all of you again. We have traveled far (or near) for twenty years, and all of us have a tale to tell. After anticipating the opportunity to leave this great state many years ago, I'm now glad to be back home in Alabama the Beautiful! Please email anytime to catch up.
