Today's Featured Biography
Niles Maxwell
After graduation, I went to live in Germany as an exchange student for a year, where I attended school, but didn’t have to do any schoolwork! There I joined a Wing Chun Kung-Fu club and was hooked.
So when I returned to Alaska, I sought out the top master in the US and found him in Tucson, Arizona. In 1993 I moved to Tucson to train under Sifu Augustine Fong at his martial arts academy there. At the same time, I helped to found a student housing cooperative called University Community Housing Project and moved into a large house with 19 others the year I started studying at the University of Arizona.
I studied English, thinking I would teach ESL in China as I pursued my martial arts training, but instead I got hooked on rhetoric and composition. While at the UofA, I joined and became a founding member of the improv comedy group called The Charles Darwin Experience, performing every week on stage for 2 years.
After graduation in 1999, I moved to Chicago, the Mecca of improv comedy, where I worked as an administrator in publishing and politics. I acted for 2 years on stage there before I started acting in films. That’s when I realized I wasn’t interested in acting, but in storytelling, because as an improv actor, you “write” the scenes as they evolve on stage.
I went back to graduate school to study for my MFA in creative writing, with a focus in screenwriting, at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago.
Meanwhile, I met my German wife on an airplane traveling from Paris to Chicago – we were seated next to one another, an 8.5 hour date. After that, we kind of knew. We married and had two boys.
We moved to Germany in 2009 where I founded Bohemian Entertainment, a film production company, and started teaching screenwriting at the University of Tübingen.
