Today's Featured Biography

Paul Toner
Hey, I just read Kelly’s message…yes, I came across the site a while ago, but I wasn’t “lurking” and trying to remain unfound, I was procrastinating (that’s a strong theme in my life story)! After High School I went to St. F.X., where I met many Newfoundlanders who said: “Paul, you would love Newfoundland!” I graduated in ’90 with a B.A., went out to B.C. to plant trees for the Summer and build some character (hardest work I have ever done or will ever do), and then followed said friends’ advice and sailed for Newfoundland (o.k., sailed sounds exotic: poor student hitchhikes to ferry, 16hour ride sleeping in the hallway, then begging lodging with the cousin of a friend is a more literal description). Nonetheless, they were right: I fell in love with Newfoundland. Love the music! Love the rugged landscape! Love the wind! Love the people (one in particular; stay tuned)!
I did my course work for my M.A. in English in two years, but while I was trying to finish my thesis, which only took about 5 or 6 years (see “procrastination”), I went off in a different direction and found full-time work in a Catholic church as a Youth Minister/Pastoral Worker (no, not a priest: children to come!). While there I met, fell in love with and married Kathy Coady, and our first daughter Danielle was born in 1998.
After 6 years in this job, I did some consulting with both church and community groups for three years, which allowed me to stay home with Danielle (new respect for the self-employed). In 2001, a career opportunity opened up back here in Moncton, and after some serious discernment, we made the move. It has been a good move, with another beautiful daughter being born (Natalie, 2002) and the kids getting to know my Dad before he passed away last year. My wife found work at Blue Cross, and I am Director of Liturgy for the Catholic diocese (French and English). A big part of me is still in Newfoundland (including my hair: see picture), but it has been rewarding being closer to my family and fun catching up with some friends. I’m still working my way slowly through another degree (M.T.S.: see “procrastination”) and I have enjoyed reading updates from other folks.
We’ve timed our vacation to Newfoundland so that I should be able to make the Saturday of the reunion.
