Today's Featured Biography
Dean Elbe
After high school, I went to UBC, and obtained a Bachelors Degree in Pharmacy. I worked in Kelowna for about 8 months (through the winter, what was I thinking?) and then returned to the lower mainland to do a residency in Hospital Pharmacy at VGH. In 1997, I also left VGH and moved to Richmond Hospital Pharmacy - better hours, no graveyard shift, and closer to Ladner (where I lived at the time - I have lived in Richmond since 2002 - so much better being close to work). Also, 3 other classmates from UBC were working there, so it made it a fun place to work. Since then, I have specialized in psychiatric pharmacy practice, becoming board certified in 2001. I work with psychiatrists, nurses and patients and do a ton of medication counselling, as well as assist in drug therapy decision making for our psychiatric patients. We also do medication dosing for selected antibiotics and anticoagulants for patients in the hospital and community. I am doing a doctorate in Pharmacy (PharmD) by distance education from the University of Washington starting this summer. On the side, I also run a small business called PowerNet Design Ltd. We do website and PDA software design, primarily for health care clients. A lot of clients are dietitians from the US actually, as I have done a lot of research with Food-Medication Interactions, including Grapefruit-Juice Drug Interactions. I recently started doing some speaking engagements in the US for dietians groups on Food-Medication Interactions and related topics.
In any "extra" leftover time, I play ball hockey, roller hockey, ice hockey, golf and tennis and vacation Kelowna (where I have a time share), with occasional road trips out east to visit some of my contacts in the US.
