Today's Featured Biography

Mike Burkart

I did not graduate from Central, although I attended school in LaCrosse from Kindergarten through our Junior year at Central. My family moved to Midland Mich after the Auto Lite Plant closed in 1959. We moved back to Richland Center Wisconsin within a few month and I graduated from Richland Center Hogh in 1964. My education after high school included:

U.W. Milwaukee-- 1960 to 1962

LaCrosse State fall semester of 1962

UW-Madison 1962-1964 where I graduated in June 1964 with a BS in Mathematics and Physics

In 1969 earned a MS in Geology from
Northern Illinois University

In 1976 I earned a PhD in Geology from the University of Iowa

In 1964 I joined the Peace Corps, teaching math and science (and lots of other topics) in a secondary school in Keta, Ghana.

In 1968 I married Judith Gibbons from Rochester, MN following a courtship arranged by Rick Walters and Sandra Scarborough-Walters. Sandi and Judy were class- and apartment-mates at the U. Minnesota where Rick was studying dentistry.

In 1969 Judy and I moved to Houston, TX where I was employed as an exploration geologists and geophysicist by Texaco.

In 1971, our son, Chris, was born in Texas.

In 1972 we moved to Iowa City where I studied for my PhD at the U.Iowa (Go Hawks) and our daughter, Erin was born in 1975.

I retired in 2005 as a research leader and hydrogeologist from the National Laboratory for Agriculture and the Environment. I still do some consulting in hydrology and water chemistry and have an office in the Geological and Atmospheric Science Department at Iowa State University.

My working career is outlined below in reverse order:

1992-05: Research Leader and Hydrologist, USDA-ARS-National Soil Tilth Laboratory, Ames, Iowa

1979-92: Chief, Investigative Projects Section, U. S. Geological Survey, Iowa City, Iowa

1976-79: Hydrologist, U.S. Geological Survey, Bismarck, North Dakota

1972-76: Teaching Assistant, Geology Department, University of Iowa, Iowa City, Iowa

1969 72: Geophysicist and Exploration Geologist, Texaco, Inc., Houston, Texas
1966 69: Teaching Assistant, Geology Department, Northern Illinois University, DeKalb

1964-66: Science and Math Teacher, Zion College of West Africa, Ghana, U. S. Peace Corps

"Just discovered your product today while trying to locate classmates ahead of our 50th reunion in 2020. The fact that you did this in a noncommercial manner in a world where everything has a price tag deserves recognition and respect, in my view. Thank you and good luck in all your endeavors." 5/5/2018
