Today's Featured Biography
Roy Olund
After spending the summer of '59 clearing brush and digging ditches for Manchester Water District, I went to the UW to study Physics and Mathematics. I am still here working and sometimes still studying Math and Physics ( or subdisciplines of each). While attending classes. I supported myself at a number of jobs including dishwasher, security watchman, boarding house cook, computer programming and oceanographic tech. After ~4.5 years I lost my battle with the Draft Board and my student deferal and reported for induction into the US Army - I flunked the physical !
At somewhat loose ends, I took a job as a chemical tech in the Department of Oceanography at the UW. Finding that I loved the life at sea I continued on this job - eventually becoming the manager of the Routine Analytical Chemistry Lab when my boss retired. I worked on this for about 15 yrs, mainly in the North East Pacific until the Department got its new ship - the "T G Thompson" which was capable of much longer voyages. On this ship, I traveled across the Pacific from Japan, south working off the coast of Mexico and Central America, further south in the Galapagos Islands and off the coast of Chile and Peru. My last trip on the "T G T" was from Seattle to Barcelona via Mexican Coast, Panama Canal, southern Carribean, trans-Atlantic, the Black Sea, the coast of Greece and then to Barcelona. This journey took about 6 months.
In the mean time fell in love with a co-worker and got married. As we were both seagoing personnel, we were able to make many of the cruises together - nice. This lasted about a decade and I have remained single since.
After the long trip, I grew weary of the sea life and returned to school part time to study Electrical Engineering and left the life of offshore oceanography and be came a support engineer for a Geophysical Research Group studying flow in estuarine environments. This lasted another decade until the lead professor ended his field program and his need for my services. After two six month temporary jobs - setting up a facility in Friday Harbor and participating in a hydrothermal-vent study, I went to work for the Chemistry Department in their electronics / instrumentation support group. This is where I am today. In the interim I have studied Astronomy and had a forray into the graduate physics program. Now I am taking advantage of the Access Program at the UW - $10 tuition for two courses a quarter on an audit basis.

"Just discovered your product today while trying to locate classmates ahead of our 50th reunion in 2020. The fact that you did this in a noncommercial manner in a world where everything has a price tag deserves recognition and respect, in my view.
Thank you and good luck in all your endeavors."
