Today's Featured Biography
Paul Rickman
After finishing HHS in '75, I attended and graduated from James Madison University and then attended Western Maryland College for my masters of education degree in deaf education. In the fall of 1980, I moved to Jacksonville, North Carolina and took a position in the Onslow County School System. I worked for two years in a junior-senior high setting and then worked for five years at the elementary level. I taught deaf and hard of hearing students in grades 2 - 5. In the spring of 1985, I won Teacher of the Year for my school district and competed on the regional level. I was first runner up. During the first six months of 1987 I worked for the Department of Public Instruction out of Raleigh, North Carolina helping to recruit new teachers (this job was temporary and the result of the teacher of the year competition). In April, 1987, I married Julia Cleveland, a social worker that I met through church. Julia and I have been married for 27 years and we welomed Benjamin Thomas in 1990 and Sarah Jordan in 1993. I returned to the classroom in the fall of 1987 at Jacksonville High School and worked as a hearing impaired teacher and interpreter until the summer of 1995. After working for 15 years "down East", Julia and I decided to look elsewhere for new jobs in a new location. I was able to find work in the Davidson County School System just south of Winston Salem. Julia had a harder time finding work and stayed home with our children. I worked at North Davidson High School from 1995 until June of 2009. I spent one year working at both the high school and the middle school in my area. Julia eventually found a social work position in Forsyth County (Winston Salem) where she worked in the child protective services division until she retired in 2007. Our children have grown up here in Winston Salem and have attended high school across the field from our home. My son, Ben, graduated from Mount Tabor High and Appalachian State University. He is currently a grad student at the University of North Carolina - Wilmington. Sarah graduated from Tabor and is now a Senior at Elon University. She has an interest in being an early childhood teacher like her dad. After teaching for 29 years, I retired to stay home and take care of Julia as her MS has progressed. I have loved my life and enjoyed my high school experience at HHS. As of last May, I no longer have ties to Hopewell as dad passed away in '87, mom in 2008, and an older brother, Tommy, in 2009. My only sister, Trudy, lives in Richmond and our families try to get together several times a year. I hope that I will attend the 40th anniversary events next year.

"Just discovered your product today while trying to locate classmates ahead of our 50th reunion in 2020. The fact that you did this in a noncommercial manner in a world where everything has a price tag deserves recognition and respect, in my view.
Thank you and good luck in all your endeavors."
