Today's Featured Biography
Gwendolyn Bethea Thomas
Soon after leaving dear ole Phenix High, I attended Peninsula Business College, only to discover that I really did not want to be a secretary. I married Columbus Thomas from the class of '66. We had a little girl. Then I realized that being a stay-at-home mom was not meeting my goals. So I enrolled in Norfolk State College. After graduating from NSU in May 1974, I substituted in the Norfolk City School System. I gave birth to my second child, then relocated on the Peninsula. I substituted in the Hampton Public Schools for a while. Then I had my third child. I was contracted in Hampton and then "cut". In 1981, I was "needed" in the Newport News Public Schools. REALLY!!! They needed a black female for the physical education department. I asked the question Am I Black enough? I knew that I fit the female part (smile). I became the only black female in that department which enable the black girls to have someone with whom they could identify. I remained in the same office for 24 1/2 years! My desk was fitted on all four walls in order to get a different perspective. As time progressed I became the leader of the department. We had a good time over the years. I held many positions, department leader (no extra pay), intramural coordinator for my school (Dozier Middle), we were second to none, intramural director for middle schools (city-wide), and chaired many, many committees. Before leaving I had assumed the titles: Teacher of the Year in '98, Miss T(to faculty and administrators) and Momma T (to my students). I also served as Bus Coordinator, I had the responsibility of solving many problems, sending reports, and making critical decisions as to who, what, or/and where. In retired in June 13, 2005 as a Health, Physical Education Teacher
24 1/2 years of service. I was forced to retire on disability due to injury.
Columbus Thomas and I have been married "forever" with love basically all of our adult life. We have three children: Tier LT Burks, Esquire, Terence L. Thomas, Pastor in the A.M.E Church North Carolina, and Taunita LT Sutton, Cosmotologist. We share five grandchildren: Jzane', Brianna, Caleb, Xiakore, and Malik. We also have one son-in-law, and one daughter-in-law. We are known as 05 plus5 God is good to us. That is about it.

Thank you and good luck in all your endeavors."
