Today's Featured Biography
Robert Murphy
I graduated from Worcester Polytechnic Institute with a BS in Math in 1963, earned an MA in Astronomy from Georgetown University in 1966, and a PhD in Astronomy from Case Western Reserve University in 1969.
I married Nancy Hybner (W-L '59) in 1965 and we had two children - Kimberly (b 1968 in Cleveland) and Mark (b 1970 in Honolulu).
I spent 5 years in Hawaii doing far infrared research on the planets and managing the daily (and nightly!) operations of the Mauna Kea Observatory. From there we moved to Towson, MD (a suburb of Baltimore) where I served as the Executive Director of the Maryland Academy of Sciences and led the development of their new science center in the Inner Harbor. I spent two years as a consultant, including the National Academy of Sciences, and then joined NASA in 1977.
My career at NASA moved back and forth between NASA HQ and NASA Goddard two times. I started as a research program manager and ended up as the Project Scientist (Chief Scientist) of the NPP Soumi Mission - an Earth science Mission - which launched in 2011 and is still operating as are its two successor missions.
I transitioned from astronomy to Earth sciences and led the development of the inclusion of the biological sciences into climate. (Think of the role of global ecosystems which are biological processes that drive our physical climate.)
My work took me all over the world, including much ff Western Europe, South America, Africa, Japan - and over 30 trips to the former Soviet Union. (I spent 5 years leading NASA's cooperative efforts with the Soviet Union and then Russia, Kazakhstan, and Ukraine.
Its been an exciting ride!.

"Just discovered your product today while trying to locate classmates ahead of our 50th reunion in 2020. The fact that you did this in a noncommercial manner in a world where everything has a price tag deserves recognition and respect, in my view.
Thank you and good luck in all your endeavors."
