Paul Wardinski

Since high school, I attended Virginia Tech and majored in Marketing and Education. I became a marketing teacher at George C. Marshall HS in Falls Church, where I also was the SGA sponsor, yearbook sponsor, DECA sponsor and coached 3 sports (football--actually won a district title and went undefeated in 89 with my JV team, basketball, and softball).

I was there for ten years, then went to Fairfax HS, again as a marketing teacher and SGA sponsor. I taught with Jack Hiatt, Dave Stover, George Dirner, and the principal was Don Weinheimer--all old Mt. Vernon people.

I went into administration when I became the Director of Student Activities (Athletic Director) at Thomas Jefferson HS for Science and Technology. Margaret Lunter was a counselor there and Gary Young was a math teacher and my girls basketball coach. Strange to have former teachers to be working for me.

After one year I then had the chance to open a new academy program back at Marshall and be the principal basically of a school within a school, so I returned to do that and stayed another 7 years. During that time I recruited Cindy Harris Blakeley to come over and be a counselor. It was really fun to work for, I mean with, her again. She is still there with Dan Daus, who is an AP there.

I ended up being a high school principal at McLean HS and West Springfield HS for almost 8 years. Jack Hiatt worked for me there as a teacher and as my dean of students. I then went to the central office and was a Director in the Instructional Services Department for 2.5 years. I retired from Fairfax County Public Schools after 29 years.

I went to DECA Inc. as its Executive Director. I am only the 4th ED there is 71 years. I have been involved with DECA for 35 years since being a member at Virginia Tech. It was a natural move to go over to there when the opportunity opened. DECA prepares emerging leaders and entrepreneurs for careers in marketing, finance, hospitality and management in high schools and colleges around the globe. Mt. Vernon HS had a chapter (still does) when we were there with the DECA advisors being Jack Hiatt, Jay Walker, Chuck Snell, and Diane Pruner.

I have been married almost 25 years to a Fort Hunt grad and have two beautiful twin 16 year old daughters. I absolutely love being a daddy and being involved in all of their activities--swim tams, dance, church groups, Girl Scouts, etc.

Overall, my life has been blessed and I have no complaints.
