Today's Featured Biography
Garry Manitzas
I am a retired CPA currently serving as Mayor of Fair Oaks Ranch, TX. Fair Oaks Ranch is an incorporated city of approximately 8,500 citizens which is situated about 20 miles north of San Antonio on the west side of IH 10.
I had a 38 year corporate career, primarily focused on budgeting, auditing, cash management, and project management. I worked for CPS-Energy, Valero Energy Corporation, PG&E Gas Transmission-Texas, Holland & Davis, Inc.(management consulting), and Kinetic Concepts Inc. (KCI), a durable medical equipment and advanced wound therapy company. Since leaving the corporate world about six years ago, I have worked part time as a real estate agent with our son serving as my broker.
I met my wife Dee Anna (Dedie) Menegay in Austin in one of those pre-ordained crossing of paths that could never have happened since we were living in different cities. We got married in Austin in December, 1972 and moved to San Antonio in June, 1973 after I finished graduate school.
Dedie was a 40 year public school teacher and administrator prior to retiring almost five years ago. She decided retirement was "OK" when she was flying to Venice on the day her friends were heading back to school.
We became actively engaged in the political life of Fair Oaks Ranch about three years ago. I was elected to City Council in May, 2015 and was elected Mayor in May, 2016.
Dedie and I have two children: Dr. Heather Hill, a university professor at St. Mary's University in San Antonio, and Alex Manitzas, a real estate broker who owns his own brokerage (RB Realty Experts). We have five grandchildren, ranging in age from 6 to 15. We have been very fortunate to have all of the family settle in the San Antonio area.
My mother, Dorothy Laughlin, who will be 90 years old in March, lives with us at our home in Fair Oaks Ranch. She is still able to be active in a senior activity center in Boerne, Tx which is a few miles north of Fair Oaks Ranch.
We are parishioners at St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Catholic Church. I am a member of the Fair Oaks Ranch Rotary Club and Dedie belongs to several ladies' bridge groups and actively participates in both our local Homeowners Association and some citizen volunteer committees. (The City staff just refers to her as the "Assistant Mayor.")
Dedie has degrees from Sam Houston State University and Webster University. I am a Longhorn and received BBA and MBA degrees from The University of Texas at Austin. For all the Aggies out there, I will note that both our daughter and son in law are Aggies, and, for a "tea sip," I have written a lot checks to A&M!
