Today's Featured Biography

Sharon Wilson Newell

Graduation from Rio Hondo High School was on Friday and I began work the following Monday. Typing awards and a favorable interview afforded me a job with SAMSCO Corp. in Harlingen as a Western Union TWX operator.

While a senior in high school, I had received an engagement ring from David Newell. He was attending college and working part time. Later he began full time employment with Rio Hondo Implement. We were married October 24, 1959.

My working continued until our first daughter Sherry was born. I kept books for our farm and enjoyed expanding our family with son Frontis and daughter Suzanne. My tenure with Rio Hondo Implement began when Suzanne entered the first grade.

Our implement and parts business grew and we would have three locations. "New" facilities were built in Harlingen and Brownsville. We added a tri-location computer system.

In 1996, I became the victim in a freak multi-car expressway accident which required me having multiple surgeries, long rehab and permanent nerve damage. My office machine skills are gone. This event aided in the decision to sell our dealerships.

David retired into an expanded farming operation which includes our son Frontis. They also ventured into land development with subdivision sales. David has assumed all computer bookkeeping duties. Recovery for me is ongoing and learning new techniques might improve my skills over time.

Loving Rio Grande Valley history finds me in Historical Society and on the Museum Board. Volunteer hours include Harlingen Chamber of Commerce and the Rio Grande Valley Livestock Show. David still enjoys an occasional game of golf. Our phone number is "on call" for our five grandchildren; all living in the Valley ..... the oldest attending college at Mary Hardin Baylor. They fill our lives with fun and excitement !!!!
