Here is a basic look at my story for the past 45 years; I’ll try to keep it brief. After Milby High School graduation in 1964, I attended San Jacinto College (Phi Theta Kappa National Jr. College Honor Society) and The University of Houston; graduating U of H in May, 1969 with my undergraduate degree. I had a double major in Speech and English. Bob Kendrick and I were a U of H debate team for one year, but then I had to give it up – it was taking too much time and I was working two jobs to put myself through school. After graduating in ’69, I had a call from an old friend / former minister who wanted me to come and work for him as a Youth Minister at Seabrook Methodist Church in the Clear Lake area. At that time, I wasn’t sure if the ministry was the right thing for me. After a week of serious soul-searching and prayer, I said yes. It was a decision that would give me direction for the next 40 years.
In the meantime, I had met Miss Connie Scarborough on the “other end” of a double date at a UH football game. I don’t know if there really is such a thing as “love at first sight” but this was about as close as it comes. We were engaged when I graduated and we were married in June, 1970. Connie graduated UH in May, 1971 with a degree in Education and her Teaching Certificate. In August, 1971, we moved to Atlanta, Ga., so I could attend seminary. We enjoyed Atlanta for three years, but when I finished with my Master’s Degree in ’74, we couldn’t wait to get back to Texas.
From ’74 until ’83, I worked on large church staffs (in and around the Houston area) doing Youth Ministry; in 1983, we moved to Beaumont and I did another 7 years. In 1990, it was time to expand my horizons and become the Senior Pastor of my own church – and besides, Senior Pastors were the ones making money to support a family and Connie and I were now a family of four! Adam was born in Jan., 1980 and Tami was right behind in July, 1981. Adam attended Navarro Jr. College and Lamar Univ., graduating with his degree in Business and Tami attended Texas A & M, graduating with her degree in Geography. We are very proud of both of them. Adam married Tina (a girlfriend from junior high school) and they have presented us with Kira Grace, our 5 year old granddaughter and Channing Dove, our 1 year old granddaughter. A third granddaujghter – also a little girl - is expected in November.. Tami married Anthony in mid-October (Yes, dad did do the ceremony) and we get to see them frequently. She continues as a science teacher in the Splendora School District. For the remainder of my career, I served as the Senior Pastor of Methodist churches in Bridge City, Cleveland, Fairfield. Bellville, and Humble until my retirement.
Four years ago, I began to experience some serious health concerns – back problems, diabetes, liver problems, eye complications, etc and it became necessary for me to take an early disability retirement. Connie had already gotten her necessary years, and she was already retired. We bought a home in Kingwood, Tx. and we are doing well! I do have some limitations, but am learning to live with it all.
I enjoy reading, the Rocky Mountains, photography, playing on the computer, and spoiling Kira and Channing rotten… Connie reads, chases me through the Rockies, sews, does embroidery, and spoils Kira and Channing rotten… All in all, it’s been quite a ride! I wouldn’t have missed any of it for anything!
Connie and I can usually be found at 4535 Brook Shadow Dr. in Kingwood, Texas 77345. Our home phone is 281-359-4535. (Yes, the phone and the street address DO match – I’m an old, forgetful man who needs a little help wherever I can get it.) Take care of yourself and those you love…
Peace and Grace.
