Today's Featured Biography
Kay Porter
I have lived in Oregon since 1967 and in Eugene since 1970. I got my Ph.D. from the University of Oregon and have worked as a gerontology professor (now we are gerons!! as a friend tells me.) I have worked as a sport psychology consultant with athletes and as a counselor in private practice since 1979.I have written a popular applied sport psychology book, "The Mental Athlete," which has been in print in various revisions since 1985. The most current edition came out in 2003 and has helped many athletes perfect their "mental game." It has sold over 75,000 copies around the world.
I love the green of Oregon and have hiked, backpacked and run all over the state. I was a runner for 25 years and ran 7 marathons and many shorter races. In addition, I now coach people to walk marathons and half marathons. I used to run them; now I walk them, saving my knees for my old age!
I am currently not in a relationship, but have had two long term relationships over the years.
I chose not to have children in this lifetime, as I felt I had to raise myself, and wasn't mature enough to raise children. I've worked with many students and clients over the years whom I've helped to heal their "issues," and to find meaning in their lives. So I feel I've contributed to young people's lives in meaningful ways.
I now work part time and enjoy my life in Oregon with friends and colleagues. I have traveled to several foreign countries and I enjoy traveling. I return to El Paso only every few years, as I no longer have family in the area.
I now consider myself as an "Oregonian" since I've lived here for over 40 years. And it is pronounced, "Orygun."
I am enjoyed seeing my classmates from 1958 at our class reunion in 2008. Many of us hadn't seen each other since we were 20! So it was fun and interesting.
Here is a toast a friend of mine taught me: Salud, amor, pesetas y tiempo para gosarlo! I try to live by these words and enjoy life and the world around me.
This year, 2012, we have had the USA Olympic Trials in Track and Field in Eugene, which were wonderful and I hiked in Italy for 10 days with REI from Assisi to Rome. Great trip and beautiful. I am still working and seeing clients and revising my book, THE MENTAL ATHLETE. It is still available at amazon.com and Barnes and Noble. It's a how to book in sport psychology and used by many athletes of all different ages and sports.
See you soon! Kay

"Just discovered your product today while trying to locate classmates ahead of our 50th reunion in 2020. The fact that you did this in a noncommercial manner in a world where everything has a price tag deserves recognition and respect, in my view.
Thank you and good luck in all your endeavors."
