Today's Featured Biography

Shirley Foster Hollaway

I married Bill Hollaway shortly after graduation in 1958, and worked for AT&T until we moved to California in 1960 where Bill attended Chaffee College. There I worked for Celanese until the birth of our daughter, and by the time our first son was born, I was beginning to long for Texas, so we moved back to Austin where our younger son, was born. Moving on to Houston, Bill went to work for Trans-Texas Airlines (later to become Continental Airlines) where he worked for 28 years until his death. I have always enjoyed being at home and was able to be a stay-at-home mom and take care of the children and be active in their school functions.

In 1970 we opened a ceramic/art shop in Houston. I began to teach classes in painting and discovered how much I loved doing that. Thirty seven years later I am still conducting classes in my home studio for up to 20 students a week and enjoying every minute of it. I have made many long-term friendships from the students who have come to me over the years.

Sadly, Bill died of a heart attack in 1992, but we had 34 wonderful years together. We were able to travel to Hawaii, Germany, Romania, Mexico, California, and Oregon. After his death, I floundered for a while, trying to find my direction. I finally got my bearings and developed an interest in genealogy. I have found many new cousins all over the United States and tracked most of our family's ancestors back to Scotland and England.

My daughter lives in southern Oregon, working as a regional director for a foreign exchange program. My two sons live in the Houston area. One was a policeman for a while, but is now happily employed as an AT&T technician. My other son and his wife, manage a large U-Stor storage complex in nearby LaMarque. I have four wonderful grandkids. One works for Mesa Airlines as a crew tracker in Phoenix; another also lives in Phoenix and works for a major hotel chain as an Assistant Manager. Another is in the Army in Korea working as a communication/computer specialist. The youngest, named for his grandfather, lives here in Houston and spends a lot of time with me. We have a great time going places and doing stuff together.

Time marches on and it now 2010. My oldest son and his wife have given me twin granddaughters. Talk about fun!! My oldest granddaughter has provided me with my first great-grandchild and another great-grand child is expected from my grandson and his wife in the army in Germany.

I have started hosting exchange students for my daughter and what a blast that is. I currently have a Chinese boy who is a delight to have around.
