Today's Featured Biography
Kelly McDonald
After High School, I attended Western Kentucky University as a Performing Arts Major with an emphasis in Dance. When both knees and my vocal cords began to fail, I headed for Florida and began my tenure as a GATOR! I obtained a B.S in Biochemistry and Ph.D. in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology. I followed with post-doctoral work in Environmental Toxicology with the U.S. Geological Survey. I met my wonderfully weird husband, Steve Nowicki, in graduate school and we moved to California with two large unruly dogs in 2000. I spent five years in the Biotechnology industry while Steve completed his residency in Pediatrics and his fellowship in Developmental and Behavioral Pediatrics (which was very fitting for him). I bolted for the academic world in 2005 when Steve finally got a job! I am currently the Director of the North Valley Biotechnology Center and Assistant Dean of Biotechnology at American River College, but will be joining the Biology Faculty of California State University, Sacramento in August of 2009. Steve and I have been coaching Special Olympics swimming, softball and running for over 8 years and currently serve on the board of directors of Team Davis, a non-profit organization to enhance the lives of individuals with physical, cognitive and developmental disabilities. This is the most rewarding part of my life! I also race as a CAT1 cyclist for Touchstone Climbing racing team (based in Berkeley, CA), raising money and awareness for the National Ataxia Foundation - I lost my amazing dad to a cerebellar ataxia in 2007. Steve and I spend whatever free time we can find hiking and back country skiing with our dog, Zena. That is about it (probably too much). I am hoping to make it to the reunion to see everyone!
