Dave Pickrell

Time has passed far more quickly than I ever imagined possible. I started this class webpage out of a longing to reconnect with those who gave me so much love and support at CHS, and who grew into adulthood alongside me. Some might contend that I didn't quite make it that far, but I did have my share of fun along the way. And, life since has been anything but uneventful.

Following graduation from the U of T, I sensed that the Anderson County Draft Board smelled fresh meat. So, I opted to spend my four year Viet Nam era military tour in the protective arms of the US Air Force. Dayton OH, Adana Turkey, and Minot ND certainly aren't the most popular travel destinations. But, with heartfelt honor and respect for the courageous men and women who served in Viet Nam, I was grateful to have avoided harm's reach.

My civilian career was varied and challenging, to say the least -
1974-1984 - Internal Revenue Service (Nashville / Knoxville / Memphis)
1984-1990 - American Capital Corporation (Houston) - best job of my life!!
1990-2001 - Various management positions (Houston) in Financial Services, Risk Management and Internet Technology.

In 2001, I began a long sabbatical to look after my ailing father. Following his death later that year, I found myself considering the prospect of retiring early. Right or wrong, that is the course I chose.

In 2008, semi-retirement lost its luster, and I secured an appointment to the Harris County Appraisal Review Board. I served on the Board until my term ended in December 2013, including appointments to Vice Chairman in 2012 and Chairman in 2013. In 2016, I secured a second term, only to have it prematurely end in 2019 due to changes in the Texas Tax Code.

In 1976, I was blessed with a beautiful daughter, Keri Denise. June 2005, she presented me with my first grandchild, an absolute stunner named Meaghan Elizabeth. Keri and family fled their New Orleans home for Houston August 22nd, 2005, one day before hurricane Katrina slammed ashore. She ultimately returned to Memphis where she grew up. In 2012, she gave me my grandson Jacob. That boy truly proved to be a force to be reckoned with.

I consider myself very fortunate to have traveled much of the world, experienced much of life, and done so in the company of so many close friends. June 2021 will mark the 37th anniversary of my arrival in Houston. At times, I considered moving elsewhere, but the city is so big I could never find my way out of it.

My high school years were, without a doubt, the most memorable and formative period of my life. The opportunities I was graciously provided by the many people who were so very important to me then, directly contributed to who I am today.

Yes, I was CHS Drum Major the entire four years. But I could not have accomplished that without the continuing encouragement and support of my friends and classmates. Hopefully, I served them well, and I will never forget everyone's enduring loyalty. Our shared experiences forever influenced all our lives.
