Colleen F. Coonelly is a lawyer with over 20 years of experience in civil litigation, clinical law teaching, and the creation and administration of pro bono programs for lawyers.
She earned an A.B. from Duke University and a J.D. from Vanderbilt University School of Law.
Upon law school graduation, she practiced law as a litigation associate for seven years at Pepper Hamilton, a large private law firm in Philadelphia.
Ms. Coonelly then served as a clinical faculty member at Penn Law School where she taught upper-level students and supervised their case work in the Penn Legal Assistance Office.
She then directed attorney education and pro bono programs at law firms in Philadelphia, including serving as Director of Litigation Training and Pro Bono at Wolf Block for seven years.
Most recently, Ms. Coonelly has been working with a non-profit domestic violence victims shelter program, Laurel House, to seek funding for legal services for domestic violence victims in Montgomery County. She has also served as pro bono counsel to various shelter residents.
Through Laurel House and Temple Law School, she designed and launched a Domestic Violence Clinic, which she started teaching in August, 2010. The Clinic has both a classroom component and a practice component. In the practice component, students assume the role of lawyer, pursuant to the PA student practice rule, and provide civil legal assistance to clients escaping violent relationships and seeking protective orders, child custody and child support. Under the close supervision of Ms. Coonelly, law students employ legal approaches to seek to improve the safety and economic independence of the clients.
Ms. Coonelly has been married for 18 years to John P. Lavelle, Jr. They live in Bryn Mawr with their three lovely daughters, one unruly Jack Russell terrier, and one large rabbit.
